Business Services Coordinator - Journey
Position located in Chapel Hill, NC. Application deadline is 11/11/2025. Full-time, 40 hours per week Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with occasional evening, weekend, and holiday availability.
Position Summary The Department of Athletics offers 28 intercollegiate varsity sports with competitions both on‑ and off‑campus. Over the academic year the unit will manage and direct over 250 athletic competitions and related events—often hosting multiple events over a two to three‑day period. The assistant director reports directly to the Assistant Athletic Director for Event Management and is responsible for ensuring that all elements of GameDay consistently exceed expectations.
Responsibilities
Provide outstanding leadership to the Game Day Management effort for all assigned sports, including administration, planning, budgeting, facilitation, supervision, and evaluation for home regular and post‑season varsity competition and key special events.
Support event preparation and management; utilize technology, plan and manage various projects; procure and contract manage; recruit, hire, and train volunteer and student staff; supervise cleaning, health and safety; communicate and manage a part‑time, volunteer and student workforce.
Coordinate volunteer workers and organizations to enhance the game environment under NCAA Division I guidelines and initiatives; communicate proactively with departmental and university officials, coaches, event management support staff, and spectators.
Recruit, train, supervise, and retain part‑time paid supervisors, students, and volunteer ushers; provide customer service training and report manual writing; submit and reconcile budgets and financial data; focus on venue security based on national and international events.
Leverage relationships with campus operating units (Marketing, Facility Operations, Ticketing, Information Technology, etc.) and external partners such as Rams Club, Tar Heel Sports Properties, auxiliary staff services, concessionaires, and campus police.
Provide thorough direction and analysis for operations, financial activities, budget utilization, and strategic planning for nearly $3 million in annual spending.
Plan, execute, and evaluate events at multiple athletic venues across campus and surrounding areas.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience in recreation or athletic facility operations.
Ability to organize and direct temporary/volunteer and student employees.
Proficient knowledge of various computer applications.
Strong mathematical analysis, data collection, evaluation, summarization, and recommendation skills to improve performance and efficiency.
Adherence to University and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
Effective communication skills and ability to interact with senior administrators, coaches, faculty, and staff.
Ability to handle sensitive and complex issues during planning and execution of game day events.
Must work nights, evenings, and weekends, including overtime as required.
Valid NC Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor's in recreation administration, sports management, or events management.
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to event management.
Experience in event management within an intercollegiate athletic environment.
Required Licenses/Certifications Valid NC Driver's License.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must lift or move 25 lb. or greater.
May navigate stairs; must manage a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
Attention to detail is essential.
Must work extended hours during competition seasons and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act. The incumbent reports Clery crimes to the Compliance Manager and completes annual training on reporting responsibilities.
Position/Schedule Requirements Occasional evening and night work; occasional overtime; weekend work; valid NC Driver's License required.
