Applied Quantum Research Scientist PhD Degree

– Cambridge Semantics Inc., Ann Arbor, MI (USA) Job ID: 47978

Job Summary This is a contract position for an Applied Quantum Research Scientist with a Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

What You Will Do

Design and implement optically determined magnetic resonance (ODMR) sensing systems using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and other quantum defects; optimize and upgrade confocal microscopy setups for quantum sensing applications.

Conduct research on quantum sensing protocols for magnetic field, electric field, temperature, and pressure measurements; investigate novel quantum sensing modalities to improve sensitivity, spatial resolution, and temporal resolution.

Investigate novel methodologies for applied quantum techniques outside of sensing applications.

Design experiments to characterize quantum sensor performance under various environmental conditions.

Lead efforts to downsize quantum sensing concepts from optical table setups to integrated photonic packages; develop compact optical systems including miniaturized lasers, photodetectors, and optical components while maintaining quantum sensing advantages.

Contribute to cross‑disciplinary research teams with deliverables including prototypes, intellectual property, and publications (an active interest in publishing is highly desirable).

Participate in and support a workplace safety culture and related activities.

Basic Requirements

Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or an applicable area.

Deep understanding of quantum defects (NV centers, SiC defects, etc.), quantum sensing protocols, and spin physics.

Proficiency in laser systems, optical design, confocal microscopy, free‑space alignment, and photon detection.

Experience with microwave electronics, lock‑in amplifiers, data acquisition systems, and precision measurement techniques.

Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar for data analysis and instrument control.

Clear scientific writing and communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in integrated photonics design and simulation (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL).

Familiarity with electronics design and packaging.

Experience with quantum communication concepts such as squeezed light or entangled photons.
