Project Overview
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will act as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.
This is a one‑of‑a‑kind opportunity to expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long‑lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810, which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will support the development of Mechanical systems and equipment for the AP1000 project by preparing studies, piping and instrumentation diagrams, calculations, engineering specifications, data sheets, material requisitions, performing technical bid evaluations, and more in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements.
The role is designated as part‑time telework with at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project.
Major Responsibilities
Develop design drawings such as Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Ventilation & Instrumentation Diagrams (V&IDs).
Perform formal calculations including line/duct sizing, pump sizing, valve sizing, equipment sizing, design pressure and temperature, and heat load calculations.
Develop engineering specifications, material requisitions, and data sheets.
Review vendor submittals and integrate information into a design solution.
Develop design configuration packages for configuration control and change management.
Execute to schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work product.
Assist in building an inclusive team environment where all can contribute to the maximum of their capabilities.
Provide leadership and mentoring to team members.
Establish or assist in establishing and maintaining work plans to ensure schedules are met and stakeholder requirements are satisfied. Create and track actions, estimate hours, and update schedules.
Devise innovative approaches to solving problems from a variety of detailed technical options and assess cost implications.
Identify major technical uncertainties and present solution options for management decisions.
Serve as an advisor for the analysis and solution of engineering problems and interpret drawings, verbal instructions, and applicable codes relevant to project requirements.
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the client in developing the design.
Education and Experience Requirements Requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be able to complete a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
Must be authorized to live and work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, P&ID and V&ID development, HVAC, fluid system design, hydraulic, heat transfer, and thermodynamic calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.
Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
Extensive knowledge of ANSI/ASME Codes and Standards including ASME B31.1 or B31.3 and/or international equivalents.
Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering work processes, procedures, and specifications.
Experience with Microsoft Office programs and other mechanical software.
Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
[Preferred] Experience in power (nuclear) plant design.
[Preferred] Experience with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME‑NQA‑1, MIL‑Q‑9858A, or ISO‑9000.
[Preferred] Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering.
