Summary Integral member of a small management team led by the AVP/Managing Attorney, overseeing the operation of the Staff Counsel Office across multiple jurisdictions (MA, CT, RI). Responsible for leading and developing a subset team of trial attorneys and support staff, including conducting annual performance reviews. Acts as an expert resource for Attorneys, Legal Staff, Claims Department, Examining, and the Company on diverse legal issues impacting service delivery and defense of insureds and/or the Company.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates strategic litigation expertise in representing insureds and/or the Company through all phases of litigation, pleadings, discovery, motion practice, trial/ADR, and appeal.

Advice on strategy for all matters and provides guidance to the Claims Department and Company as needed. Assists AVP/Managing Attorney with daily operations, including personnel management (onsite/offsite), budgeting, expense planning, savings/metrics tracking, goal setting, and conflict resolution.

Independently manages and leads a satellite office or practice group when required and assumes AVP/Managing Attorney responsibilities during absences.

Serve as a trusted advisor and collaborator to the AVP/Managing Attorney.

Handles hiring, training, and professional development of attorneys and staff, ensuring compliance with ethical standards, firm expectations, and Company goals.

Independently operate, manage, and lead a satellite office and/or practice group as needed.

Capable of assuming responsibilities of AVP/ Managing Attorney during absences (vacations, leaves of absence, or sickness). Serve as trusted advisor to, and collaborator with, AVP/Managing Attorney.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited Law School and admission to the Bar in the jurisdiction(s) in which the office is located is required.

Minimum of 10 years of relevant legal and litigation experience of progressing responsibility is required.

Experience must include prior insurance defense or tort litigation work with extensive experience independently managing a complex case load. Comprehensive knowledge of the legal system and all aspects of litigation is required. Jury trial experience required. Must have advanced written and oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively and persuasively with external/internal clients, courts, Claims Department, other business units, and outside professional legal personnel. Must be able to competently represent clients, the firm, and the Company to members of the legal community and other professional associations. Must be able to analyze complex issues that arise in litigation and recommend viable, ethical, strategic solutions in the best interest of clients or the company as the situation requires. Demonstrated leadership and management qualities, with an ability to motivate and support others, is required. Proficiency with computer software including current operating system, MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook, and legal case management programs required.

Additional Requirements Local and overnight travel may be required. Computer use requires 50%+ of the workday. Phone use required 25%+ of the workday.

Salary Range $121,100 - $158,000
