required. Criminal history disclosure form, fingerprint sample, and release of records to appointing authority required. Discharge from U.S. armed forces not honorable disqualifies candidates.
Qualifications Education and Experience:
High‑school graduation equivalent and at least five (5) years of full‑time increasingly responsible youth or adult security experience, including two (2) years supervisory experience and one (1) year adult correctional security experience. Substitutions: full‑time employment as a Tennessee Correctional Officer (State of Tennessee) or one year as an Inmate Relations Coordinator for supervisory experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Be willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
Be at least 18 years of age on date of application.
Be a citizen of the United States.
Have good moral character as determined by investigation.
Complete a criminal history disclosure form.
Agree to release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority.
Supply a fingerprint sample as prescribed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Have no conviction for a felony or any domestic assault conviction, and no discharge under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces.
Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and essential functions of the position.
Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and essential functions of the position.
Submit to and pass a pre‑employment illegal drug screening test.
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment.
Upon appointment, successfully complete all additional prescribed courses of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any online training.
Overview The Correctional Lieutenant is responsible for correctional supervisory work of average difficulty, including the supervision of Correctional Sergeants. An employee in this class is responsible for supervisory work at a state correctional facility, acting as the assistant shift supervisor or shift supervisor. The position differs from a Correctional Sergeant (lesser scope and complexity) and a Correctional Captain (full shift security supervision).
Responsibilities
Supervise or perform searches of inmates and vehicles; conduct shakedowns of cells to ensure safety.
Respond first to emergencies such as medical needs, escapes, fires, and natural disasters.
Prepare shift reports, daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate passes for court and doctor appointments, and daily population records to ensure accountability.
Restrain, secure, or control inmates using restraint devices as necessary.
Plan and coordinate activities of assigned subordinates overseeing various programs to meet operational and strategic priorities.
Instruct employees and provide on‑the‑job training, including emergency situation training.
Inspect the facility for compliance with policy and procedures mandated by state standards.
Maintain accountability and care for all assigned equipment such as handcuffs, keys, radio, weapons, and other security devices.
Observe inmates to ensure established policies and procedures are followed.
Record all information such as incidents, disciplinary actions, and activities in the State database.
Perform security inspections such as physical fence and ground checks to ensure no security breaches and compliance with all areas.
