Position Summary and Key Responsibilities The Staff Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the University's general ledger for the preparation of financial reports. This position requires the ability to be a collaborative problem-solver and communicate effectively with various stakeholders to include Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Payroll, and other campus partners. The Staff Accountant will apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to record financial information, prepare financial statement reports, and conduct financial analyses and audits. Develop and implement internal accounting processes and controls related to payroll general ledgers. Assist other staff with accounting or special projects.

Key Responsibilities:

General Accounting Activities Prepare reconciliations and documentation as needed for internal and external audits such as financial reports, financial notes, transmittal letters, financial statistical letters, and fraud surveys. Assist with reviewing reconciliations and documentation as needed for internal and external audits. Responsible for daily billing, posting and report processes.

Reconcile non-cash balance sheet items. Prepare and upload bulk journal entry feeds. Conduct routine account analysis to ensure accuracy and propriety of accounting entries. Initiate correcting journal entries as needed. Participate in developing best practices, policies and procedures for accounting activities. Assist with fiscal year end close procedures and financial reporting.

Treasury Activities

Review banking transactions daily and gather supporting documentation for each entry, reporting and correcting discrepancies. Update accounts payable sub-ledger with cleared check information. Prepare journal entries for the general ledger and various subsidiary ledgers by compiling, researching, and analyzing data regarding updates needed. Serve as liaison for areas on campus with revenue generating activities with payment processors. Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations for all cash accounts. Investigate, compile, and submit unclaimed property to state authorities. Assist with the preparation of periodic cash reports identifying sources and uses of cash. Payroll Accounting

Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions. Assist with budgeting and reporting requirements to include but not limited to EADA, NCAA, and internal salary and benefit forecasting. Prepare journal entries related to benefits and scholarships to ensure entries align with generally accepted accounting principles. Reconcile payroll liability accounts & resolve any discrepancies in a timely manner. Student Financial Services Activities

Review and reconcile third party postings to student accounts with cash receipts. Reconcile accounts receivable daily balances to banking transactions. Confirm receipt of funds from federal and state agencies for financial aid and record corresponding bank transactions on the general ledger. Assist with preparation of the Schedule of Federal Awards for annual financial audit. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field. One to three years of experience in accounts receivable and/or treasury management. One to two years of experience with enterprise business systems and Microsoft Office products. Thorough understanding of accounting principles. Candidates must show evidence of problem-solving, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong verbal and written communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in accounts receivable and/or treasury management. Experience in higher education or other not-for-profit accounting. Experience with Ellucian Colleague enterprise business system. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Work Conditions Office environment; 40 hours per week, normally 8:00am - 5:00pm; some evening and weekend work may be required.
