Job Summary
The Grounds Technician is responsible for providing grounds maintenance services at assigned sites. This role involves ensuring that grounds and athletic fields are attractive and safe, protecting against erosion, and performing a variety of special maintenance tasks. The position also supports the preparation of grounds for assemblies, events, and recreational activities.
Key Responsibilities Pesticide Application:
Assist in the application of pesticides to control insects and weeds in accordance with established procedures.
Meetings and Training:
Attend unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather necessary information for job performance.
Landscape Maintenance:
Clean landscaped areas and related items (e.g., storm drains, fields) to prevent flooding and remove hazards. Maintain playground equipment to ensure safety and compliance with guidelines. Plant and maintain a variety of landscaping materials (e.g., lawns, shrubbery, flowers) to enhance grounds appearance and protect against erosion.
Grounds and Equipment Maintenance:
Perform maintenance on grounds and job-related equipment (e.g., fix potholes, plow snow, salt lots). Conduct vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure safe operating conditions.
Field Preparation:
Prepare grounds and athletic fields (e.g., fertilize soil, maintain flower beds, paint field lines) to ensure safe and attractive areas for events and activities.
Material and Supply Management:
Request materials, supplies, equipment, and support personnel as needed to complete assignments.
Safety and Emergency Response:
Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism) and notify appropriate personnel for resolution.
Transportation and Communication:
Transport tools, equipment, and supplies to job sites as required. Communicate with diverse groups and stakeholders regarding grounds maintenance activities and needs.
Additional Duties:
Perform other related tasks as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Job-related experience is required.
Skills:
Operate grounds maintenance equipment including tractors, weed whips, mowers, and hand/power tools. Perform multiple tasks with adaptability and attention to detail.
Knowledge:
Methods for preparing and maintaining various plants, shrubs, and lawns. Safety practices and procedures related to grounds maintenance.
Abilities:
Perform basic calculations and problem-solving. Work effectively with diverse individuals and under various conditions. Schedule activities, manage data, and utilize job-related equipment.
