Position Title: Skilled Maintenance Worker - Mechanic

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent with technical training in gasoline and diesel engine systems and repair Minimum of three years experience as an automobile mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities Prior supervisory experience and/or training required CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid South Carolina commercial driver's license
Must have current government issued identification
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
8 Hours/230 Days
Support Staff Salary Schedule (Grade 12)
The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled tasks for the maintenance and repair of district-owned vehicles and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One towards increased outcomes for students. Interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively. Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment. Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities. Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information. Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required. Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities and essential functions; provides for safe storage and proper use of all tools, equipment and materials. Receives work orders and meets with immediate supervisor to discuss and plan weekly activities. Maintains and repairs vehicles and grounds equipment such as tractors, mowers, weed eaters, blowers, compressors, hydraulic lifts, electric generators, backhoe, buses, trucks, cars, golf carts, support vehicles, etc. Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems to detect problems or defective part(s). Performs inspections of all equipment and vehicles to ensure proper operating condition. Maintains stock and inventory of parts, supplies,and fluids for all equipment as needed. Responds to after-hour emergency calls as required. Prepares and files various records, maintenance reports and supply requisitions. Utilizes technical manuals and experience to repair vehicles/equipment. Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with district staff, immediate supervisor, vendors, and all outside personnel to ensure safety through productivity and quality work for all student riders. Plan, schedule, and inspect the work of outside personnel. Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and coordinating resources in an effective and timely manner. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Performs or oversees repairs and maintenance. Keeps records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance. No budgetary responsibility. Supervises assigned personnel.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation.
Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge and current research and theory. Ability to organize and implement a flexible work schedule in order to meet reporting deadlines. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with scheduled deadlines. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee. Computer literacy required.
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties of the job. Knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and tools used within the mechanic trade. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of trade terminology. Knowledge of proper and safe use of equipment and machinery necessary for assignment completion. ability to follow work orders and maintenance reports to determine needed activity. Ability to determine safety hazards. Ability to determine needed repairs, replacements, parts, and supplies in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Ability to conduct and carry out short and long-range planning for maintenance and repairs. Ability to make decisions based on written policy, instructions, knowledge and/or experience. Strong personal and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with immediate supervisor., staff, and other groups and individuals involved in daily activities. Ability to direct the activities of assigned personnel. Ability to operate trucks and other automotive equipment incidental to regular duties. Skill in the use of hand, mechanic's and power tools.
