The fundamental reason this classification exists is to keep all District facilities in clean and orderly condition. Responsible for performing manual and semi-skilled tasks and will be assigned maintenance work and equipment operation functions. Assist with the daily functions and duties of the custodial department.

* Note the level of pay will be dependent upon the certification and level of experience of the incumbent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Custodian/Maintenance

1. Revise work schedule during emergency periods and coordinate and substitute for other custodial staff throughout the District when necessary. 2. Maintain building by performing routine duties such as, but not limited to: sweeping, dusting, arranging furniture and setting up for activities, emptying trash and pencil sharpeners, cleaning chalkboards, and other related cleaning activities. 3. Maintain building by performing maintenance duties such as, but not limited to: washing walls, woodwork and windows, cleaning and polishing metal surfaces. 4. Clean and maintain hard and surface floors by wet mopping and spot cleaning. 5. Clean, sanitize and deodorize restrooms and locker rooms. 6. Maintain grounds by mowing lawn and trimming shrubbery. Observe mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate cause of problem. Repair or replace defective parts. Lubricate and clean parts. 7. Operate security system. Secure building at the conclusion of shift. 8. Visually inspect facilities to locate unsafe or unclean areas. Notify management concerning need for major maintenance or repairs of equipment, furnishings, light fixtures, heating and ventilating equipment, and building and grounds. 9. Work in cooperation with outside contractor and ensure quality workmanship of complete project. 10. Plan and complete work assignments in a timely manner. 11. Maintain an orderly work site with necessary materials and tools. 12. Perform various duties in regards to repairs, maintenance, and equipment operation in order to maintain good working condition of equipment and facilities. 13. Collaborate with school staff to ensure a clean and safe environment. Ensure maintenance and custodial activities does not interfere with the educational process. 14. Attend meetings, training, and seminars as deemed appropriate and necessary. 15. Work directly with highly sensitive personnel information and student information. Maintain confidentiality of work related information. 16. Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards established by the District. 17.Perform other related duties and functions as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Certificates, Licenses, Examinations

Successful completion of written tests and/or verbal interviews.

Possesses or ability to posses a valid South Dakota Drivers License.

Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted in accordance with SDCL.

Other such examinations as deemed necessary by District.

Subject to work overtime if the situation arises which requires immediate attention with approval by the supervisor. 6. The employee is required to wear hearing protection and face shield when operating equipment. 7. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 8. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.
