Position Summary
FlightWave, a subsidiary of Red Cat Holdings, is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to design, prototype, fabricate, test and integrate mechanical systems for compact fixed-wing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) capable of vertical takeoff and landing. The role spans flight hardware and ground control systems for defense, public safety, and other government security organizations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design electro-mechanical systems in SolidWorks.
Manage weight budgets, center-of-gravity calculations, aerodynamic optimization, and other design trade-offs.
Prototype, validate, and prepare designs for scalable manufacturing.
Develop and build tools, fixtures, and automation jigs for manufacturing.
Identify and qualify new vendors and manufacturing partners.
Draft mechanical drawings, assembly procedures, inspection and test procedures, test plans/reports, and product requirements documents.
Develop and execute plans for ground and flight testing of unmanned systems.
Required Qualifications
B.S. in mechanical, aerospace, or closely related engineering (advanced degree preferred).
Minimum 5‑9 years of direct industry design experience.
Excellent problem-solving, oral and written communication skills.
Minimum 4 years of SolidWorks experience.
Experience with high-rate production design and manufacturing.
Desired Qualifications
Fixed-wing aircraft architecture, stability, flight control, and aerodynamic knowledge.
BLDC motor and mechanism design, integration, and controls.
High-reliability motion system PCB and cable routing.
Camera and optical systems experience.
Mechanical side of PCBA layout and integration.
Programming for fixtures, test systems, and production hardware (Python, Arduino, LabVIEW, etc.).
Structural composites design, including fiberglass and carbon fiber, and composites mold design.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
Ability to stand for extended periods and move throughout office, manufacturing facilities, flight test fields, and other workspaces.
