Introduction The State of Connecticut Department of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for investigating and prosecuting all criminal matters in the state. It is an independent agency of the executive branch, composed of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill and the State’s Attorneys for each of Connecticut’s thirteen judicial districts.

About this Position We are recruiting one full‑time Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney or Apprentice Prosecutor for the Stamford/Norwalk GA 01 in Stamford, CT. The position offers a 40‑hour work week (Monday–Friday) with core hours of 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and a starting salary of $93,275 for a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney or $44.67 per hour for an Apprentice Prosecutor. Position number: 82913.

The Role As a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney, the incumbent must be an attorney in good standing with the Connecticut Bar. The role involves investigating cases, preparing filings, negotiating pleas, conducting trial proceedings, and representing state interests in criminal and motor‑vehicle cases. Travel may be required. The position is appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission following a background check.

As an Apprentice Prosecutor, a law‑school student within five months of graduation who is a certified legal intern may be appointed and will advance to Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney after admission to the Connecticut Bar within one year. Background check is required; travel may be required.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work) The class is accountable for receiving training and representing the state in prosecution of assigned criminal and motor‑vehicle cases and infractions.

Examples of Duties

Review all documentation for assigned criminal cases and infractions; direct supplemental investigation.

Prepare cases for arraignment, including selection of charges and original statement of facts.

Review outstanding defense motions and prepare responses or objections.

Interview witnesses and victims.

Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of each case.

Initiate and complete related legal research.

Negotiate pleas with defense attorneys.

Conduct pre‑trial conferences, jury selection, and trials before juries, panels, judges, or magistrates.

Review arrest warrant applications and present for final review.

Maintain liaison with state and local police.

Advise victims of their rights and direct them to appropriate agencies.

Defend petitions of habeas corpus and present trial action.

If in the Appellate Unit, defend appeals before the Appellate Court and Supreme Court.

Prepare appellate materials for submission to the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office after conviction.

Review applications for search and seizure warrants.

Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

Knowledge of criminal law, legal process, statutory authority, and the Division’s operation.

Interpersonal, negotiating, trial, and counseling skills.

Oral and written communication skills.

Ability to analyze legal problems, prepare briefs, and argue cases.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney must be an attorney in good standing with the Connecticut Bar at the time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Law‑school students within five months of graduation who are certified legal interns may be considered Apprentice Prosecutors.

Appointment Apprentice Prosecutors must be admitted to the Connecticut Bar within one year of graduation.
