You’re working on fund formations where you never speak to the GP. You draft PPMs that get rewritten by seniors. You’re three years into investment funds and you’ve never once pitched a client or led a formation from term sheet to closing.
You should be structuring private equity funds, negotiating LPAs with institutional investors, and advising GPs on fund strategy—not just filling out fund document templates and running diligence checklists.
You’re ready to be a trusted advisor building a book of business, not just another funds associate buried in ancillary documents.
A premier AmLaw firm is building out its Investment Funds practice in Los Angeles from the ground up —and this is your chance to be the founding associate who shapes how the practice grows on the West Coast.
This isn’t a backfill. This is a strategic, once-in‑a‑career opportunity to work directly with a dynamic partner who recently joined the firm and is building something special.
What You’ll Actually Do:
Work as the partner’s right hand
on all investment funds matters—you’ll be the lieutenant, not one of ten associates
Structure and execute fund formations for private equity, hedge funds, private credit, real estate, and hybrid funds
Draft and negotiate limited partnership agreements, subscription agreements, and side letters
Work directly with fund sponsors and institutional investors on complex alternative investment strategies
Handle retail alternative funds including BDCs, interval funds, and closed‑end funds
Get direct client contact from day one —pitch meetings, strategy calls, and business development opportunities
Help shape and build the LA practice with a partner who values your input and wants you to grow alongside the team
Collaborate with investment funds partners across NYC, Charlotte, and Atlanta offices on national matters
Build your own book of business in a growing, entrepreneurial environment
What You Bring:
3‑6 years of investment funds experience (fund formation and investment management background required)
Proven experience with private equity, hedge funds, credit funds, or other alternative investment vehicles
Strong drafting skills (you’ve negotiated LPAs and fund documents, not just reviewed them)
Entrepreneurial mindset and business development acumen
Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort with direct client interaction
Stability and commitment —they’re building something long‑term and want someone who can put down roots
Strong academic credentials
What You Get:
Market Compensation:
Top‑of‑market LA BigLaw pay + bonus
Potential Signing Bonus:
Possible immediate signing bonus (not guaranteed, but on the table)
Real Growth Opportunity:
Be part of building a practice from the ground up—this is YOUR chance to shape how things develop
Direct Partner Access:
Work closely with an invested, easygoing partner who will mentor you and give you real responsibility
Reasonable Hours:
2000 billable target (150 pro‑bono + 50 DEI/bus dev can count toward that)
National Platform:
Collaborate with top investment funds partners across multiple offices
Business Development:
Real opportunities to pitch, develop relationships, and build your own practice
The Catch: This opportunity requires someone who’s ready to commit. They’ve had a prior offer fall through and need someone who sees LA as a long‑term home and this practice as a career‑defining opportunity. If you’re a job hopper or treat this as a stepping stone, this isn’t the right fit.
Why This Role is Different: Most investment funds associates work in crowded NYC or SF practices with 15+ associates competing for attention. This is different. You’ll be the only associate working with the LA partner, which means
every deal is your deal , every client meeting is your meeting, and every growth opportunity is your opportunity.
Location: Los Angeles (California bar required; open to relocation for the right candidate)
Apply Now: DM me directly or send your resume confidentially to srushing@laterallink.com. All inquiries handled with complete discretion. This role is urgent and interviews will move quickly.
