As Microsoft’s cloud business continues to grow, the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume, with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the

Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering (CHSE)

team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability for Microsoft’s cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer‑focused solutions and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Understand customer requirements and high–level architectural design; lead electrical design execution at system level and produce detailed design specifications.

Drive internal design collaboration among all functional teams (thermal, mechanical, firmware, OS) and guide external partners (ODM/OEM/Suppliers) for detailed design implementation, ensuring product functionality, performance, quality, and reliability.

Responsible for complete and deep design review, including schematics, board files, BOM, DFT, DFM, etc.

Work with team members to define board‑level bring‑up and electrical test requirements, ensuring complete coverage and guaranteeing execution.

Work with partner teams to create system‑level bring‑up and end‑to‑end validation test plans, ensuring complete coverage and guaranteeing execution.

Troubleshoot, triage issues, lead hardware‑related debug efforts with partner teams, and drive resolution and bug reports.

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience.

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience.

Equivalent experience.

8+ years of relevant hands‑on experience in system‑level (compute, storage, networking, accelerator card, and/or management module) design and/or implementation across the hardware development lifecycle.

8+ years of experience developing board and system‑level bring‑up and test plans.

8+ years of experience debugging board and system‑level issues for Cloud Servers.

Other Requirements Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements is required for this role. This includes, but is not limited to, the Microsoft Cloud Background Check, which must be passed at hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with high‑volume hardware production in compute, storage, networking, accelerator, and/or management modules.

Knowledge of data center operations at scale.

Experience with high‑speed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, and Ethernet.

In‑depth experience with operating systems (Windows and/or Linux), system firmware (BIOS, BMC), and system security (hardware and software).

Proven verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

Experience with high‑speed and high‑power product design.

Experience executing hardware validation and functional test plans.

Ability to work across multiple disciplines (hardware, firmware, software, and/or data center infrastructure) to identify risks, drive discussions, detail system tradeoffs, and assess impact.

Excellent team player.

Pay: Electrical Engineering IC5 – typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year. In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metro area, the range is USD $188,000 – $304,200 per year.
