Value Creation - formulate and implement strategies to optimise US ETR and impact on RoTE within risk appetite, while partnering stakeholders to create a culture of robust control and continuous improvement in tax reporting and forecasting. Value Protection - ensure adherence to federal, state, and local tax laws, and oversee accurate and timely tax filings. Identify and mitigate potential tax risks to avoid audit controversy and dispute, penalties, and legal issues. Advocacy – help shape / influence regional tax policy and legislation that is sustainable and achieves policy objectives with minimum compliance and collateral costs. Business Partner - provide tax-related strategic insights and guidance for key business decisions and in alignment with our commercial strategy, with regard to long-term shareholder value. As an SME, act as the primary contact with tax authorities and regulators to maintain our reputation as a responsible taxpayer. Lead and develop the tax team, fostering continuous learning and professional growth. Key Responsibilities
Strategy - Manage US & Americas tax affairs in alignment with our commercial strategy, maintaining our reputation with tax authorities and regulators, consistent with the Group’s Strategy. Understand and contribute to the US & Americas business strategy. Partner internal stakeholders and maintain relationships with Tax Authorities and policy makers to advocate for sustainable tax policy changes with minimal costs. Business
Provide oversight for external advisers and reporting advice to business and on corporate transactions, partnering with Business Tax team members. Sign off on tax aspects of material approvals and restructurings. Collaborate with Business units on tax change impacts and keep stakeholders informed of material developments. Support clients by proactively managing US & Americas taxation within tax risk appetite. Maintain relationships with local business units and supporting functions. Promote tax awareness and identify tax planning opportunities with local business units; manage tax exposure mitigations. Manage Tax teams to oversee external tax advice for local business units and corporate transactions. Governance
Manage governance for US & Americas direct & indirect taxes. Understand risk and compliance requirements; comply with laws and Group policies, including anti-money laundering, sanctions and the Group Code of Conduct. Identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk and compliance matters; embed ethics and compliance culture. People & Talent
Hire, engage and retain high-quality people with succession planning for critical roles. Set and monitor job descriptions and objectives; provide feedback and rewards based on performance. Collaborate on development plans for Tax CoE staff; lead with example and foster risk-aware culture. Ensure ongoing training and development and maintain skilled leadership across teams. Additional Responsibilities
Risk Management - control tax risks to protect SC Group’s franchise; oversee Tax Operational Risk Framework and risk reporting to Risk Committees. FATCA and US withholding and information reporting - RFO responsibilities, sign-off on annual information reporting, ensure compliance. Tax Reporting & Forecasting - ensure timely quarterly tax reporting and forecasts; manage tax reporting for branches and subsidiaries. Transfer Pricing - work with TP team to implement TP methodologies and governance; support audits and cost allocations. Regulatory & Business Conduct
Display exemplary conduct and lead the team by Group Values and Code of Conduct; ensure ethics and compliance with laws and regulations. Lead the team to achieve outcomes in line with Conduct Principles; escalate and resolve risk and compliance matters. This role has supervisory responsibilities and follows Bank supervisory principles. Experience & Qualifications
Licensed CPA or attorney with tax accounting experience. Minimum 12 years of experience with international taxation of non-US and US financial institutions (preferably inbound taxation and US group taxation). Strong stakeholder management; ability to communicate complex tax issues clearly. Leadership track record with process teams and effective control environment. Experience with tax authorities during audits; experience with diverse global tax professionals. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills; able to work with outside advisors and manage relationships. About Standard Chartered
