Environmental Inspectors (Field Based) – ERM ERM is hiring Environmental Inspectors to conduct inspections at construction sites in Monterey, California. The role is full‑time (40 hours per week) with a 12‑month contract and the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities

Conduct field inspections, monitoring, and field survey work as directed.

Act as point of contact with agency officials, regulatory staff, landowners, contractors, clients, and other project members.

Review and implement project documents and provide critical judgment on environmental compliance issues.

Assess environmental conditions in the field to evaluate potential impacts from construction activities.

Identify and mitigate potential issues ahead of construction.

Oversee implementation of mitigation measures.

Perform environmental sampling (hydrostatic test water, soil, stormwater) and verify sample quality.

Conduct flagging of wetland boundaries, cultural and biological resources exclusion zones, refueling zones, etc.

Document compliance with a project's environmental requirements by preparing daily written inspection reports with photos.

Participate in construction meetings and evaluate restoration activities.

Support compliance with regulations concerning spill prevention, wastewater, stormwater, storage tanks, and waste management.

Work safely, wearing approved PPE (hardhat, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, high‑visibility vest).

Manage work within quality, budget, schedule expectations and scope‑specific assignments.

Communicate with the project manager, senior inspectors, regulatory agencies, and client staff to promote environmental stewardship.

Requirements

Minimum 2 years of construction inspection or monitoring experience (stormwater inspection experience is a plus).

Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline preferred.

General knowledge of environmental disciplines, including SWPPP BMP installation and maintenance, water resource protection, biology, materials storage, air quality, dust control, Hazmat storage, spill control, and waste management.

Strong communication skills and willingness to learn from senior inspectors.

Valid driver’s license, working vehicle and good driving record.

Excellent observational and organizational skills; experience recording detailed technical data is a plus.

Basic computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel) for inspection documentation.

Daily hours and duration vary depending on site location and workload.

Additional desired experience: soil and water sampling, SWPPP certification, Hazmat evaluation, species‑specific biology, nesting bird experience, cultural resource knowledge.

Pay Transparency Annual base pay range: $71,742 – $94,432 (approximately $34.49 – $45.40 per hour). This is a limited‑term, non‑exempt position. Employee pay within this range is based on relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skill, geographic location, performance, shift, and business needs. Bonus pay is not available for this role.
