Position Overview
The firm is seeking a Property Accountant. The Property Accountant’s primary responsibility is to record the daily accounting for a portfolio of properties in a timely and accurate manner. This position prepares journal entries, work papers, account reconciliations, budget‑to‑actual analysis, and other summary reports to support and for presentation in the financial statements.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain accurate financial records for multiple entities in compliance with U.S. GAAP.
Manage all general ledger functions for an assigned portfolio of properties, including monthly close.
Support the annual budgeting process, including preparation and analysis of property‑level budgets.
Assist with cash management and forecasting to ensure adequate liquidity and financial efficiency.
Contribute to the development and enforcement of internal controls, policies, and procedures.
Oversee property‑related Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and tenant security deposit transactions.
Monitor and follow up on Accounts Receivable aging and collections in coordination with property management teams.
Review and interpret tenant leases, ensuring accurate data entry into the MRI accounting system.
Perform account and bank reconciliations, ad‑hoc financial analyses, and special projects as needed.
Prepare and review detailed budget variance reports, including income, expenses, capital expenditures, leasing costs, NOI, and cash‑flow analysis.
Process property employee payroll, union dues, and benefits.
Prepare real estate tax, operating expense, and other escalation or pass‑through billings for tenants.
Compile workpapers and filings for quarterly sales tax submissions.
Maintain the general ledger, process journal entries, and post adjustments to ensure accurate financial statements.
Lead the month‑end close process, including preparation of financial reporting packages and management commentary.
Prepare audit workpapers and coordinate with external auditors during annual financial audits.
Effectively manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines while responding to other job‑related requests.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred.
CPA certification or active progress toward CPA designation a plus.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
Proven ability to meet deadlines with a strong sense of urgency, self‑discipline, and accountability.
High degree of accuracy and efficiency in work products.
Effective analytical and problem‑solving skills with sound judgment.
Collaborative team player who responds positively to feedback and thrives in a team‑oriented environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and a strong ethical character.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with general ledger and accounting software preferred.
