Security Officer-Public Safety Full Time Evenings The salary range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00 (Hourly Rate). Placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors such as relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Description The Security Officer I reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

Investigate and quell hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain patient, visitor, and employee security.

Complete descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.

Notify appropriate city officials (police and fire) and prepare reports.

Perform regular perimeter and internal patrols of the hospital buildings and grounds to protect patients and property.

Conduct investigations into incidents of hazardous conditions, theft, criminal activity, and other security or safety issues.

Monitor the access control system, fire and duress alarms, and the security video system.

Control traffic as necessary to assure access for emergency vehicles and patients/visitors.

Maintain security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors according to schedules or special circumstances.

Provide escorts for staff to their vehicles as requested.

Deliver deceased bodies to the morgue and release them to authorized persons in accordance with policies.

Respond to all emergency codes in accordance with department guidelines.

Alert the department manager of any activities or deviations from departmental standards that may require disciplinary action or follow‑up.

Enforce all hospital policies and procedures as directed.

Display a competent and professional service image while being approachable and service‑minded at all times.

Conduct contraband searches for patient and employee safety as needed.

Monitor individuals or situations to ensure patient and employee safety as needed.

Oversee staff parking permit process and monitor compliance per policy.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

High‑school diploma or GED

Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire; maintain IAHSS Basic certification

Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire

Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire

Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with a variety of individuals, including employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement and other agencies

Writing skills necessary to complete reports and paperwork that meet departmental standards

Valid driver’s license

Physical ability and knowledge of how to operate a motor vehicle

Physical demands: lift/carry up to 65 pounds and push/pull up to 75 pounds; stand, walk, and respond quickly in emergencies; lift and assist with heavy objects occasionally.

Preferred

Experience in healthcare security, police work, or military service

Valid FOID card

Associate or Bachelor’s degree

Job Details: Full‑time, 80 hours per pay period, evening shift, 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. with alternating weekends and holidays.
