Job Summary This position specifically supports the Sports Performance Director of Olympic Sports and the respective coaches in enhancing the physical performance of student‑athletes through sport‑specific training.

Essential Functions

Devotes full time and energy to duties as Sports Performance Coach for assigned athletic team(s).

Complies with University, NCAA, and conference rules; ensures staff and student‑athletes also comply.

Assists the head coach to create a positive student‑athlete experience and healthy team dynamics.

Cultivates a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; recruits and retains student‑athletes from varied backgrounds.

Uses reasonable efforts to foster competitive success and meet annual performance objectives set by the Sports Performance Director.

Additional Department Expectations

Ensures safety procedures are followed; all coaches must be certified in CPR and first aid.

Collaborates with athletics trainers and physicians to implement wellness and conditioning programs.

Supports head coach directives regarding training goals.

Assists with administrative functions and paperwork related to athletic program oversight.

Collaborates with the Associate AD for Facilities, Operations & Events on facility management and equipment maintenance.

Attends conventions, conferences, and clinics in line with departmental and university policies.

Represents UMass Amherst professionally in community outreach, clinics, and media engagements.

Monitors student‑athletes’ adherence to conduct, appearance, and punctuality rules.

Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned.

Understands that the University annually evaluates performance based on duties and responsibilities.

Serves on Department and University committees as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution.

Minimum of one (1) year of strength and conditioning coaching experience.

Ability to work weekends and nights.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of physiological principles and professional philosophies.

Evidence of teaching strength and conditioning principles to diverse constituencies.

Certificate from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, or International Sport Sciences Association.

Ability to stand for extended periods and perform moderate to high movement and activity.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of intercollegiate strength and conditioning coaching experience.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions Balancing, carrying, pulling, pushing, standing, repetitive movements, bending, travel to other campuses. Work involves climbing, reaching, sitting, twisting, and lifting.

Additional Details This position is designated as essential personnel.

Work Schedule

Varied schedule based on demands.

Nights, weekends, and holidays are required.

Salary Information UMass Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range of $47,709 - $71,489 for this position.
