The Role We’re looking for a hands‑on and strategic
Indirect Tax Manager
to join our Finance team. This role will lead our
U.S. sales and use tax operations , while also overseeing
third‑party service providers
managing
VAT ,
property tax , and
business licensing
compliance. You’ll ensure we stay compliant in a fast‑evolving retail and e‑commerce landscape—and help us build a streamlined, tech‑enabled approach to indirect tax. Key Responsibilities Sales & Use Tax (Primary Focus)
Own all aspects of U.S. sales and use tax compliance across our online, retail, and wholesale channels.
Manage monthly filings, payments, reconciliations, and data validation.
Manage sales tax licensing in new jurisdictions and renewals in existing jurisdictions.
Ensure tax engine (e.g., Avalara) is properly configured and maintained across platforms.
Monitor and manage exemption and resale certificates.
Partner with cross‑functional teams (e.g., E‑commerce, Retail Ops, Legal, and IT) to ensure accurate tax application across platforms and products.
Track and interpret evolving sales tax legislation (e.g., marketplace facilitator laws, economic nexus).
Third‑Party Vendor Management
Oversee external tax service providers for:
VAT compliance
across international markets.
Property tax filings
for retail stores, offices, and distribution facilities.
Business license applications and renewals
Review returns and reports prepared by vendors to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Act as the key liaison between internal stakeholders and external tax partners.
Technology & Process Optimization
Collaborate with IT and external vendors to enhance our tax tech stack, automate compliance workflows, and reduce manual processes.
Maintain SOPs and process documentation for indirect tax.
Continuously seek opportunities to improve accuracy, scalability, and efficiency of tax operations.
Audit Support & Risk Management
Prepare responses and documentation for indirect tax audits or notices.
Maintain a strong internal control environment for all indirect tax processes.
Stay ahead of regulatory changes and assess business impact.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax. CPA or MST is strongly preferred.
5+ years of experience in indirect tax, with a strong focus on U.S. sales and use tax.
A combination of accounting firm and industry experience is highly preferred.
Retail, e‑commerce, or consumer products experience preferred.
Experience with Avalara or other tax engine software; ERP experience (NetSuite preferred).
Strong understanding of VAT principles and international compliance challenges.
Proven ability to manage third‑party vendors and cross‑functional relationships.
Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and capable of operating in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment.
