Technology team
has six different departments: Information Security, Service Delivery, Business Enabling Systems, eCommerce & Marketing Technology, Data and Stores, Services & Supply Chain. About the Location Collaborative Work Environment
This role is based at our Phoenix Home Office, with an expectation of working a minimum of four days in the office each week. In a standard work week, associates may work up to one remote “flex day” (with leader approval). Our hybrid approach is designed to foster strong collaboration while also supporting flexibility and individual success.
About the Job Manager, Data Engineering
PetSmart LLC seeks a full‑time Manager, Data Engineering based in Phoenix, AZ. The primary duty of the Manager is to lead the company’s Data Technology team and shape the future of our data‑driven organization. The role requires a strong background in data engineering and a proven ability to develop a high‑performing team.
Responsibilities
Attract, lead, and develop a talented team of data engineers and machine learning engineers to deliver high‑quality products within specified timelines and budgets.
Formulate team roles and responsibilities, actively recruit and select talent, and provide clear guidance and management to ensure high performance.
Develop and implement a comprehensive technology strategy focused on data product solutions that align with PetSmart’s goals.
Stay up to date with emerging data engineering technologies and best practices, identify opportunities for integration, and lead adoption.
Collaborate with other department leaders to align data engineering initiatives with overall business objectives and priorities, and identify opportunities to leverage data to drive business outcomes.
Accountable for project status, timelines, and communication to stakeholders and executive leadership, ensuring transparency and alignment.
Build and maintain relationships with vendors and technology partners to leverage the latest technologies and innovations.
Partner with external vendors to augment resources and meet project demands effectively.
Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring expenditures are in line with business objectives and goals.
Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, conveying technical information clearly and concisely.
Foster a positive team atmosphere, encourage collaboration, and reward team behaviors that align with organizational goals.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, or related field.
Five (5) years of progressive post‑baccalaureate experience in software development, data engineering, or machine learning in the retail and CPG technology space.
At least five (5) years of experience applying data architecture, data management, and data governance principles.
Proficiency in Agile methodologies and software development best practices.
Experience with cloud platforms and technologies such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud and their data services.
Experience with cloud data platforms and tools such as Databricks, Snowflake, and dbt Labs.
Experience with enterprise business intelligence technologies like MicroStrategy, Tableau, Power BI, ThoughtSpot, and/or Looker.
Minimum two (2) years of experience leading teams of engineers, data scientists, and analysts.
All experience must have been acquired after completion of the Bachelor’s degree program.
