Description Under supervision, the Sheriff’s Correctional Deputy maintains order and security of inmates within the Sheriff's Office Correctional facility and transports inmates to and from court, medical facilities, and other locations within and outside the County. The deputy also supervises a crew of inmates in work projects throughout the County.

Under the appointing authority of the Sheriff, the Deputy has peace officer status while assigned to a detention facility, which extends throughout California when engaged in duties described in Penal Code Section 830.1(c).

Typical Tasks

Supervise the conduct of inmates in living quarters, during meals and bathing, at recreation, and on work assignments.

Maintain security of inmates by periodic counts and surveillance of activities.

Supervise groups of inmates assigned to industries, programs, weekend work, and other maintenance activities and ensure proper work execution.

Inspect quarters for cleanliness, conduct cell searches, and confiscate contraband.

Book arrestees into jail, record custody information, inventory personal property, and orient new inmates to rules and regulations.

Release inmates from custody under proper authority.

Admit visitors with proper credentials and advise on rules and procedures.

Report unauthorized absences, escapes, and incidents.

Respond to emergencies and circumstances requiring immediate attention.

Issue citations for infractions of rules and regulations, and report suspicious occurrences.

Prepare written reports on inmate conduct and incident logs.

Transport and escort inmates to court, between facilities, or to other locations.

Maintain security, conduct perimeter checks, perform headcounts, and physically restrain inmates when necessary.

Conduct warrant and warrantless arrests within County detention facilities.

Answer inquiries concerning corrections procedures and supervise inmate visitation.

Perform business and record‑keeping functions, including monetary transactions and court paperwork.

Participate in honor guard assignments and community relations activities.

Collect, organize, interpret, and analyze information to determine appropriate actions.

Conduct recruitments and make public appearances.

Apply first aid and CPR techniques as needed.

Conduct recruitment background investigations.

Provide training in POST, STC, or other standards to in‑service personnel.

Appear in court to testify and serve as a Disaster Service Worker when required.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Special Requirements

Minimum 21 years of age.

Current California STC certificate (within last 3 years).

Current First Aid & CPR certification.

Valid California driver’s license and ability to obtain County driver authorization.

Completion of Penal Code Section 832 firearms and arrest training.

Never convicted of a felony; misdemeanor convictions considered per severity.

Pass a thorough medical examination and psychological evaluation.

Maintain physical fitness for full job duties.

Undergo background investigation, fingerprinting, polygraph, and other required screenings.

Legal right to work in the United States.

Training and Experience Note Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks above. Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.

Provide training on various subjects within the Sheriff’s Office.

Qualify for gun‑bearing assignments if required.

Read material safety data sheets and safety communications.

Physical Requirements

Work varying shifts (day, swing, graveyard) including weekends and holidays.
