Job Summary Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in a variety of educational settings. They create a flexible program and learning environment that provide specialized instruction; establish effective rapport with students; may modify general education curriculum to meet students’ needs with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports; and establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. The Special Education Teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.

Job Requirements

Valid Alaska educator certificate (initial, professional, or master) with an endorsement in Special Education.

A minimum of six semester credit hours of early childhood education.

Evidence of content knowledge in the content area of this position, shown by: a posted degree, a posted minor, passing Praxis Subject Assessment scores, or an endorsement in the content area.

Evidence of experience working with special education students.

Experience collaboratively supporting Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.

Essential Job Functions

Describe philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to practice.

Understand how students learn and develop, and apply that knowledge in practice.

Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.

Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time, and assessment.

Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.

Treat students with respect for individual and cultural characteristics.

Know the teacher's content area and how to teach it.

Develop lesson plans and instructional material; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of pupils.

Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

Use current technology to enhance instruction, record-keeping, and research.

Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.

Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning.

Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.

Identify pupil needs and make referrals; develop strategies for individual education plans.

Create and maintain a learning environment where all students are actively engaged.

Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to student's needs.

Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity and interests.

Create an environment for learning through functional displays, interest centers, and exhibits of student work.

Supervise student environment, students, and volunteers.

Partner with parents, families, and the community.

Communicate regularly with parents by newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.

Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.

Physical/Mental Demands The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. The employee may need to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. The employee must manage stress and handle conflict under pressure while working with diverse students, parents, and staff.

Work Environment Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals. The employee may be exposed to video displays, outdoor weather conditions, and moderate noise levels.

Additional Job Information Employees may work in ASD facilities on military installations (JBER). Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a satisfactory criminal background check, including checks through the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development (DEED). This position may adhere to different retirement systems based on FTE.

Salary and Benefits Salary range: $56,823–$100,155 DOE. Additional 6% increase on annual salary. Work year: 182 days, 12 contract payments. FTE: Full time, 1.0 FTE. Bargaining Unit: AEA. Additional benefits per Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System or Alaska Employees’ Retirement System depending on FTE.
