Eligibility – Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Role Overview A full‑time staff psychiatrist position is available in the Tyler Mental Health Team within the VA North Texas Health Care System Mental Health Service (VANTHCS MHS) in Tyler, TX.
Core Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive psychiatric medical care (assessment, consultation, treatment) to patients on the Tyler Team, including scheduled and unscheduled visits.
Serve as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary mental health team.
Provide clinical supervision for health care professionals such as Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacy Specialists.
Act as a formal collaborating physician for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
Qualifications
Full‑time staff psychiatrist with a minimum of a full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.
Proficiency in general outpatient psychiatry, including diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy.
Competence in managing a broad range of clinical problems, including post‑traumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and psychiatric disorders in the elderly veteran population.
Board certification, as required for CME reimbursement.
Eligibility for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) as outlined above.
Benefits and Compensation
Pay:
Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off:
50–55 days of PTO per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid CME).
Paid Parental Leave:
12 weeks paid leave for birth, adoption, or foster care (eligible after 12 months of qualifying federal employment).
Retirement:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA.
Insurance:
Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many federal programs can be carried into retirement).
CME:
Possible $2,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).
Malpractice:
Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
Contract:
No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
Work Schedule:
Full‑time; Monday‑Friday; 8:00 am‑4:30 pm.
Additional Information VANTHCS MHS provides a full range of mental health services, including general adult psychiatry, geriatrics, psychosomatic medicine, substance abuse sub‑specialty services, trauma services, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery programs, comprehensive homeless programs, peer support services, opiate replacement programs, Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery (ICMHR), vocational rehabilitation programs, domiciliary‑based programs, and inpatient services. There is ongoing active research in addiction psychiatry, PTSD, mood disorders, and homelessness. Clinical training programs exist for medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, social workers, and nurses. VA North Texas Health Care System has an active relationship with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as a primary affiliate and other local teaching institutions.
