Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse OR Completion of a Surgical Technology Program.

Surgical technologist certification.

Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Experience

One (1) year of prior surgical technologist experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) years prior scrub experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitors surgical technologist activities to ensure proper sterilization, aseptic techniques, and equipment inventory.

Ensures all supplies, materials, and equipment are available for proper performance of duties; orders and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment. Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.

Assists in training employees in proper techniques to maintain a sterile field, passing equipment during a procedure, and gowning and gloving surgeons.

Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.

Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.

Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.

Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.

Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.

Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.

Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.

Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards. Performs equipment checks as assigned.

Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.

Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.

Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.

Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.

Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.

Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs.

Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.

Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

May be exposed to communicable diseases.

Skills And Abilities

Ability to follow strict sterile technique.

Ability to set up operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass to and from surgeon during procedures.

Knowledge of and adherence to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
