Senior Firmware Engineer – Microsoft Azure Platform Security and Confidentiality Team We’re looking for a senior firmware engineer to design, develop, and secure the firmware that powers Azure’s silicon and rack infrastructure. The ideal candidate won’t just write code – they’ll understand how hardware, low‑level drivers, and firmware interface to create a tamper‑resistant system that protects Microsoft and customer data.

Responsibilities

Participate in every phase of product development, from micro‑architecture design to firmware architecture and implementation.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design and develop secure firmware sub‑systems, including low‑level hardware interfaces.

Evaluate third‑party components to ensure they meet Azure’s platform security requirements.

Root‑cause issues across firmware, hardware, and subsystems, driving bug resolution and performance improvements.

Qualifications

Doctorate, Master’s, or Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (**or equivalent experience**).

4+ years of professional experience in designing and developing software solutions, with 1–2 years of direct firmware development experience.

Proficient in C/C++ and experience with RUST programming.

Experience with embedded firmware, platform initialization, board‑support package porting, and low‑level drivers for PCIe, I2C, eMMC, SPI, USB, UART, and memory management.

Strong knowledge of scheduling, interrupts, and multi‑threading.

Background in security‑focused firmware development and ability to apply secure coding practices.

Other Requirements

Must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including a Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with driver development and Linux driver initialization.

Experience with penetration testing and advanced memory interfaces.

Firmware Engineering IC4 – Base pay range: $106,400 – $203,600 per year (USD). In the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area: $137,600 – $222,600 per year. Additional benefits apply.
