Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Research Scientist - Rodent Genetic Engineering Laboratory. The Rodent Genome Engineering Lab (RGEL) at NYU Langone Health is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to expand its transgenic model services. This onsite role focuses on generating complex genomically engineered mouse models in close collaboration with Dr. Jef Boeke at the Institute for Systems Genetics (NYULH). The Assistant Research Scientist will report to RGEL's Associate Director. Job Responsibilities
Independently generate chimeric mice for service projects designed by the principal investigators, including all scheduling, animal handling, microinjection, and associated tasks. Work with RGEL’s Director and Associate Director, as well as with Dr. Boeke to develop enhanced methods and protocols for transgenic mouse generation. Document progress and generate timely reports and presentations. Independently perform mouse rederivation, including sperm cryopreservation. Independently perform mouse handling tasks, including hormone injection (PMSG, HCG), superovulation, mating, and weaning. Independently perform euthanasia of mice and collection of blastocysts or zygotes. Independently inject mouse embryonic stem cells into mouse blastocysts to generate chimeric mice. Independently perform rederivation of mouse strains to specific pathogen-free status. Independently perform embryo oviduct transfer. Monitor daily animal health and welfare. Skills and Competencies
Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s core values and incorporates them into performance of duties. Maintains required attendance level and adherence to the work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all instruments and laboratory facilities, core laboratory procedures and practices, including quality control and compliance. Performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains confidentiality of all research information. Excel in cooperation, collaboration, and communication with all NYULH employees. Communicates professionally and precisely with other team members and clients. Recognizes problems as they occur and, through the application of appropriate policy or procedure, determines and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Must troubleshoot. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties; asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources or materials to ensure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations or problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention. Minimum Qualifications
MS degree in a related discipline and 0–1 year of experience or equivalent. Preferred: Masters degree (M.A. or B.S.). 2 years of laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited transgenic core facility. Direct experience with mouse microinjection procedures is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute. Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree (M.A. or B.S.) preferred. 2 years of laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited transgenic core facility required. Direct experience with mouse microinjection procedures preferred. NYU Langone Health provides a salary range for the role of $58,500.00 – $67,000.00 annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range listed does not include bonuses or other compensation.
