Adjunct Faculty Openings in the School of Science
The School of Science, comprised of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, and Earth and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Mary Washington, a small, public liberal arts and sciences university in Fredericksburg, VA, is seeking applicants for adjunct faculty. Adjunct faculty teach individual courses, which may include introductory or upper level courses in the above areas, as needed in Fall 2026 and beyond. Compensation is dependent on the academic credentials and teaching experience of the candidate.
Responsibilities
Successful candidates must be able to teach in‑person in a student‑centered small lecture and laboratory setting in their field/discipline. Adjunct faculty are expected to teach lecture and lab for the course that is assigned, along with classroom management including preparation of lecture materials, supervision of students in laboratory, development of instructional materials and assessments, and grading assignments. Sample syllabi and other resources are available through the departments in order to provide support. Adjunct faculty generally hold two office hours per week, with the option of some remote hours. Required
Masters or Ph.D. in field/discipline of teaching assignment, with at least 18 graduate credit hours in the field/discipline Ability to teach effectively in the field/discipline of assigned course(s) in the lecture and laboratory Preferred
Teaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary setting as instructor of record Dedication to effective teaching and high‑impact learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds Applications must be submitted to Dr. Lynn Lewis (llewis@umw.edu), Director of the School of Science, and will be reviewed on a rolling or as needed basis.
