The EHS Specialist is the on‑floor safety champion who ensures a high‑volume production environment operates without harm to people, equipment, or the environment. This role blends technical expertise, regulatory mastery, and shop‑floor influence to reduce risk in a manufacturing setting with machinery, chemicals, robotics, and high‑energy processes.
Key Responsibilities 1. Machine & Process Safety
Guard and interlock verification on CNCs, presses, conveyors, and robotic cells.
Conduct pre‑start safety reviews (PSSR) for new/relocated equipment.
Enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program; audit 100+ authorized employees annually.
2. Chemical & Hazardous Materials Management
Maintain SDS library (1,000+ chemicals) and GHS labeling compliance.
Oversee RCRA hazardous waste (90/180‑day areas, satellite accumulation).
Manage spill response team and 55-gal drum containment systems.
3. Ergonomics & Industrial Hygiene
Lead ergonomic assessments for repetitive motion, lifting, and line‑pacing tasks.
Perform noise dosimetry, ventilation surveys, and welding fume sampling.
Administer hearing conservation and respirator fit‑test programs.
4. Incident Investigation & Metrics
Investigate all recordables, first aids, and near‑misses within 24 hrs using 5‑Why/TapRooT.
Track plant TRIR
Present monthly EHS scorecard to plant leadership and corporate.
5. Training & Safety Culture
Deliver daily 5‑minute safety huddles and weekly production team trainings.
Certify forklift, aerial lift, and crane operators; maintain training matrix for 300+ employees.
Run “Stop‑Work Authority” campaign and recognition program for hazard reports.
6. Regulatory & Audit Readiness
Host OSHA, EPA, and ISO 14001/45001 audits; zero open findings target.
Submit OSHA 300/300A, Tier II, TRI, and Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports.
Manage Title V air permit (VOC tracking, leak detection, and repair program).
7. Emergency & Business Continuity
Lead plant evacuation drills (2x/year) and tornado shelter‑in‑place drills.
Maintain fire pump, sprinkler, and suppression system inspections (NFPA 25).
Coordinate with local fire department for pre‑incident planning.
8. Continuous Improvement
Facilitate Kaizen events focused on safety (e.g., guard standardization, floor marking).
Implement Layered Process Audits (LPA) with EHS questions on every shift.
Pilot wearable tech or AI vision systems for fatigue/fall detection (if budget allows).
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent.
4–10 years EHS experience in high‑speed manufacturing (automotive, food/beverage, metals, plastics, or assembly).
Hands‑on knowledge of OSHA 1910 (Machine Guarding, LOTO, HazCom, Confined Space).
Certifications
CSP, ASP, or OHST
