The Humane Society of Mason County (HSMC) seeks a licensed veterinarian with demonstrated expertise in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgery to lead medical operations across our community clinic and foster-based rescue program. This role is essential to our mission of expanding access to veterinary care, reducing pet overpopulation, and ensuring the health and wellbeing of animals in our community.
The veterinarian will primarily perform and oversee HQHVSN procedures, while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver efficient, compassionate services in a dynamic nonprofit setting. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of animal welfare in Mason County through clinical excellence, community engagement, and strategic leadership.
Core Responsibilities HQHVSN Surgical & Clinical Expertise
Perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries with precision, speed, and adherence to HQHVSN best practices
Conduct preoperative exams to assess surgical candidacy and overall health
Maintain surgical flow and sterility in a fast-paced environment
Supervise controlled substance handling and documentation in compliance with DEA and state regulations
Train and mentor staff in HQHVSN techniques, patient care, and clinic safety protocols
Work closely with veterinary technicians, assistants, foster coordinator, office manager, volunteers, and fosters
Communicate effectively with staff and leadership regarding medical concerns, unusual cases, or operational needs
Participate in veterinary staff meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Serve as a motivating force and role model for staff and volunteers
Support marketing and fundraising efforts by sharing medical updates and success stories
Field & Outreach Support
Travel to MASH (Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital) clinic locations as needed
Represent HSMC professionally in community settings and outreach events
Other Critical Skills
Demonstrates good speed when necessary
Competently performs and teaches CPR and other emergency measures
Competently handles surgical complications and rechecks
Effectively critiques breaks in sterility
Effectively critiques and suggests additional disease control measures
Understands and practices low stress animal handling
Communicates effectively with clients and colleagues
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
Licensed to practice in Washington State
Valid DEA license or ability to obtain one
Minimum 1–2 years of experience in HQHVSN surgery preferred
Familiarity with shelter medicine protocols and population management
Strong decision-making skills and ability to manage ambiguity
Excellent communication and team collaboration skills
Commitment to low-stress animal handling and humane care
Ability to teach and mentor staff in clinical and surgical procedures
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand or sit for 8+ hours
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds with assistance
Bend, kneel, and perform fine motor tasks repeatedly
Variable schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed
Travel required for off-site clinics and outreach events
Flexibility essential for schedule changes and emergent needs
