Position Title & Department: Director of the Small Business Development Center; Knauss School of Business.

Job Status: Full‑time temporary, benefit‑based position with an anticipated end date of December 31, 2026, funded by an SBA grant and renewed annually based on continued grant funding.

Overview The Director of the SBDC provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and fiscal management of all SBDC activities. The SBDC, housed within the Knauss School of Business, serves entrepreneurs and small businesses across San Diego and Imperial Counties through consulting, training, and access to resources that foster innovation and growth. The Director collaborates with the Knauss School Leadership Team, the San Diego & Imperial SBDC Network Lead Office, university stakeholders, and external partners to advance the mission of supporting small business development, entrepreneurship, and economic impact in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage and oversee all aspects of SBDC operations, including client intake, staff management, marketing, and program development.
Develop and execute fundraising and grant development strategies, identifying and securing funding from angel investors, venture capital, corporate donors, and grants.
Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and university grant policies, overseeing multiple funding sources, financial management, performance tracking, and required reporting.
Coordinate grant award administration with the Office of Sponsored Programs, preparing budgets, justification, and narratives in compliance with all funding agency requirements.
Represent the SBDC at local, regional, and statewide events, delivering presentations to community, business, and government groups, and serving as a public spokesperson on behalf of USD.
Oversee the preparation and submission of all required programmatic and fiscal reports to funders and stakeholders, maintaining accurate financial records and audit‑ready documentation.
Build, manage, and coach a high‑performing team, ensuring professional development and alignment with SBDC goals.
Conduct periodic reviews of grant‑funded activities to verify adherence to grant scopes, match requirements, and performance metrics, taking corrective action as needed.
Serve as a member of the Knauss School Leadership Team and collaborate with internal departments (Finance, Administration, Sponsored Programs) to align resources and policies.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of 5 years of experience leading innovation and entrepreneurship programs.
Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field and 5+ years of leadership experience within a higher‑education setting.
Performance Expectations – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of innovation and entrepreneurship programs and demonstrated ability to manage operations and human resources.
Experience serving diverse and underrepresented small‑business communities; working with community‑based economic development or technical assistance programs.
Experience with the Small Business Development Center network, raising private investment capital from angel investors and venture capital funds, and working with SBIR/STTR non‑dilutive funding.
Strong project management, budgeting, and analytical skills; ability to develop data collection systems to evaluate program effectiveness.
Excellent communication, networking, and presentation skills, with an entrepreneurial mindset and self‑motivation.

Compensation & Benefits $8,333.33 – $11,250 per month; excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, and retirement contributions.
