POSITION TITLE: Probation Sworn Officer CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Administration SUPERVISOR: Governors GRADE: NE6

Position Summary: Monitors, supervises and/or provides investigatory work of offenders ordered to probation in the Pueblo of Santa Ana court system. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage caseload of juvenile and adult criminal offenders meeting established contact standards through office visits or home visits. Conduct pre-sentence investigations, risk/need assessments, transfer investigations, chemical use screens, domestic violence/sex offender screens. Document case activities to facilitate effective case planning and provide courts/releasing authority with information needed to make informed decisions. Creates, updates and maintains case files; updates all case information on Court databases. Prepare violation, progress, discharge and other needed reports, maintain timely, well-organized case records and notes and appear at court hearings as needed. Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required. Provides testimony, advice, and information about offenders to assist with court sentencing and probation violation hearings. Supporting the victims of some violent or sexual crimes. Liaising with the police, social services and other authorities to coordinate the court process and the probation supervision. Interprets laws, court orders, ordinances, rules and regulations pertaining to offenders involved with the criminal and/or civil court. Helping with the rehabilitation of ex-offenders into the community Organizing and overseeing community service work. Undertaking one-to-one and group work activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:

Knowledge of the Santa Ana Pueblo traditions, language, history and culture. Ability to acquire knowledge of the Pueblo's judicial system. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to observe situations objectively and to report and record them clearly and accurately. Ability to exercise good and independent judgment. Ability to prioritize workloads, maintain confidentiality, work independently and upon own initiative. Ability to work as a team member in a structured working environment. Ability to comprehend, retain and recall factual information, and learn and apply acquired skills and techniques to the performance of assignment duties. Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, assertiveness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people. Ability to prepare accurate, complete and legible reports and present detailed, accurate and objective oral presentations and response to questions. Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or any crime of moral turpitude in the courts of this or any other state or in the federal courts. Ability to cope with stressful situations.

Minimum Qualifications: Associate's degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, and/ or business administration or closely related field plus two years direct experience. Experience in community corrections or chemical dependency treatment of correctional clients, preferred. Must successfully complete a series of Defensive Tactics and Restraint Courses to include exposure to Mace/OC Spray within one (1) year from date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must successfully complete a basic Probation and Parole Officers Certification training within one year of hire and annually recertify. Must successfully complete First Aid and CPR Courses within one (1) year from date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license and be insurable under the Pueblo's insurance at all times

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level. Situations where extreme caution must be exercised sometimes occur when contacting individuals at home. Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work will be required. Travel may be required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events. Applicant must be willing to work with offenders that have high-risk behaviors, needing intervention and/or services. Applicants must be willing to work with potential risk from offenders who are possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol or are otherwise distressed.
