Job Description Raleigh Planning and Development (PlanDev) is seeking a

Technology Technician

to manage departmental assets and provide Tier 1 technical support to department staff. This position will focus on coordinating the asset needs of and providing technical support to a 200-member department. This includes managing over 1,000 technology assets including computers, docks, monitors, and mobile devices, as well as additional devices acquired by the department throughout the years.

This position will be our primary Departmental Asset Liaison with the Information Technology Department (IT), ensuring deployed assets are properly documented and that shared and vacant position assets are properly stored and managed. This role will also serve as PlanDev's primary point-person for initial tech support consultation; things like helping ensure plotter ink is changed as needed, helping users locate and replace printer toners, and helping users with initial desk setup and basic issues like moving monitors and desk reconfiguration; as well as helping users diagnose simple issues and communicating with IT Help Desk support staff.

The City largely works within the Microsoft 365 environment, so a working knowledge of OneDrive, Sharepoint, Teams, and related applications is extremely beneficial, especially for supporting departmental users. Within the Technology business unit, there are also knowledge growth opportunities assisting the business unit with other tasks, like some Geographic Information System (GIS) data work, data quality assurance/quality control tasks, data dashboarding, and other software support.

About You :

This position requires a self-starter with strong organizational skills to manage the assets required to support the department's business needs. A strong working knowledge of the basics of computer hardware and software is necessary for success; how to connect various hardware devices, how to diagnose simple issues, and how to communicate with users in simple terms. As well, experience managing and tracking a large inventory will serve the position well.

The Technology Team is part of PlanDev's Business & Strategy Management Division and serves a key role in the success of PlanDev's mission to provide timely, predictable, and customer-oriented services in the areas of policy development, compliance, long-term planning, design services, and real estate. We provide a direct support role to all the business divisions within PlanDev, including Building Safety, Comprehensive & Long Range Planning, Continuous Improvement & Customer Service, Urban Projects, and Zoning & Land Development. We help ensure the 200 member staff of the department is well-equipped and served by the hardware, software, and data needs they require to fulfill PlanDev's vision: to partner with the community to plan for and develop a safe and sustainable built environment supporting a healthy and prosperous Raleigh.

Generally, it is expected that this position will provide support to a variety of needs within the department, either directly, or by helping to coordinate appropriate support from IT and/or third-party vendors. Some key job duties are below.

Serves as PlanDev's official Asset Liaison, keeping device tracking accurate and up-to-date Ensures that each user has the equipment they need to fulfill their role, including ordering new equipment as leases end, helping to repair or replace broken or defective equipment, and provisioning newly created positions Coordinates the maintenance of shared assets such as loaner laptops, laptops for interns, kiosk machines, Teams conference rooms, televisions, projectors, large format plotters, etc. Collects, stores, and repositions equipment while there are vacancies Tracks and manages software licenses along with Finance & Business Operations staff Assesses and makes recommendations for software and hardware requested by departmental work units Provides technical support for end users, network components, applications, and/or technologies that support departmental services Provides assistance with installation, configuration, performance testing, and informal troubleshooting when possible; serves as an intermediary with IT customer support when necessary Works with IT to ensure that stored and common devices remain up-to-date as new users transition in. This includes all full-time, part-time, and temporary employees of the department Assists with data quality work as needed Typical Qualifications Education and Experience: 6 months+ training beyond High School in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field. No previous experience required

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an office or similar indoor environment as well as in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), on a construction site or in a warehouse or shop environment.
