General Description

The purpose of this job performs semiskilled and administrative support work providing animal shelter services, receiving, processing and caring for animals, assisting the public, preparing and maintaining files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned.

This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Disinfects and cleans animal housing areas including kennels, cages, and shelter grounds. Performs general custodial duties; sweeps and mops shelter grounds; removes trash; maintains flowerbeds; mows grass; wash and dries towels and blankets; cleans restrooms; dusts furniture; cleans kitchen area. Feeds and waters animals; bathes animals; administers immunizations and medications; weighs and grooms animals; collects fecal samples. Answers the telephone; receives and responds to inquiries. Collects fees from owners; sells dog licenses; issues receipts; assists with and completes various forms for adoption, trap loans, violation warnings, return to owner, receipts, license forms, etc. Receives and processes incoming animals; scans animals for microchips and tattoos/identification; assists the public with owner released animals, adoptions; issues and accepts return of trapping equipment. Euthanizes animals as required; maintains appropriate records on drug use; bags and disposes of carcass. Performs related work as required. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.

Physical Demands

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen. Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions. Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Must possess and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license and an acceptable driving history. Possession of or ability to obtain euthanasia certification within one year of employment. Possession of or ability to obtain drug administration certification from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the State Board of Pharmacy within one year of employment.
