Overview

SENIOR TECHNICAL WRITER (NAUT):

Bowhead seeks a Senior Technical Writer to support our customer on the Nautical contract in the Arlington, VA area. This position serves as the lead documentation specialist for complex DoD systems undergoing cloud migration, responsible for creating, maintaining, and managing comprehensive technical documentation that meets stringent government standards.

Responsibilities

Lead the development and maintenance of comprehensive technical documentation suites including system specifications, user manuals, installation guides, and operational procedures

Manage and coordinate documentation projects across multiple concurrent cloud migration initiatives

Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and quality assurance processes

Conduct complex technical interviews with subject matter experts, engineers, and system administrators to gather detailed information

Create and maintain documentation templates, standards, and best practices for the organization

Review and edit technical documents produced by junior staff, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance

Collaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, system architects, and project managers to ensure documentation alignment with project objectives

Develop and implement documentation management systems and workflows

Provide mentoring and professional development guidance to junior technical writing staff

Coordinate with government customers to understand documentation requirements and delivery expectations

Manage documentation version control systems and ensure proper configuration management

Create visual aids, diagrams, flowcharts, and other graphical elements to enhance technical documentation

Develop and deliver training materials and presentations for various audiences

Ensure all documentation meets DoD standards, security classification guidelines, and accessibility requirements

Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and project planning sessions

Manage documentation budgets, schedules, and resource allocation

Stay current with emerging documentation technologies, tools, and industry best practices

Coordinate with information security personnel to ensure proper handling of classified information

Interface with the customer and external stakeholders in working groups, technical exchange meetings, and other forums

Chair/co-chair meetings and working groups on behalf of government representatives as directed

Resolve problems, allocate resources, manage personnel, and monitor performance to meet contract requirements

Provide daily control and supervision of employees

Provide planned replacement information at least 15 calendar days prior to replacement

Provide information within 24 hours of an unplanned replacement

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited institution, or 15+ years of progressive experience in technical writing in lieu of degree

Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in technical writing, preferably in government or DoD environments

Minimum of 3+ years of experience managing technical writing teams and complex documentation projects

Extensive experience with documentation management systems, version control, and configuration management

Advanced proficiency in technical writing tools including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and documentation platforms

Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, system architecture, and cloud computing concepts

Proven leadership experience managing technical writing teams and complex documentation projects

Excellent project management skills with ability to handle multiple concurrent deliverables

Deep knowledge of DoD documentation standards, style guides, and regulatory requirements

Experience with XML, HTML, and other markup languages used in technical documentation

Strong analytical skills with ability to quickly understand complex technical systems

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Required: IAT Level II certification (Security+, GSEC, SSCP, CCNA Security, or GCIH)

Desired: PMP, technical writing certifications, or relevant cloud technology certifications

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 25 pounds on occasion.

Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged period amounts of time.

Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to maintain a security clearance at the Top Secret level with SCI eligibility and maintain SAP eligibility. Due to work requirements, this position will not entertain work from home capabilities. US Citizenship is a requirement for this contract.
