The Department of Enterprise Services (DES)
provides centralized business services to state government agencies; to other public entities such as cities, counties and tribes; and to Washington residents. DES' mission is to strengthen the business of government for a sustainable and just future.
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G)
is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).
About the Opportunity: As a Fire Alarm Technician, you will play a key role in supporting Building & Grounds operations by performing skilled installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of fire sprinkler and suppression systems across agency facilities. You will ensure systems meet safety codes and operational standards, conduct testing and troubleshooting to maintain reliability, and maintain accurate system documentation and building floor plans. This position also contributes to continuous improvement by analyzing data, tracking performance metrics, and supporting process enhancements to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant fire protection systems. Duties
Some of What You'll Enjoy Doing Includes: Install, modify, and maintain building fire alarm components and campus-wide fire alarm and sprinkler monitoring systems. Install, calibrate, and supervise fire sprinkler monitoring devices, signaling equipment, and related hardware, cabling, and power supplies. Retrofit, integrate, and monitor carbon monoxide detection devices and auxiliary alarm equipment connected to access control, HVAC smoke management, and elevator safety systems. Install conduit, conductors, and fiber optic cabling for fire alarm data, power, and communication networks. Perform NFPA-required fire alarm testing and inspection of all system components, including detectors, pull stations, alarms, and batteries. Configure and program fire alarm control panels and network devices using software such as Honeywell Notifier, FireLite PS-TOOLS, and JCI OnyxWorks. Ensure all panels and equipment are properly labeled and documented per NFPA standards, including testing records, circuit identification, and power source information. Respond to incidents involving mission-critical fire alarm applications and components, ensuring timely resolution and system reliability. Coordinate with local Fire Departments during alarm events, providing access, information, and post-incident communication with tenants and the Work Management Center. Maintain accurate and up-to-date building floor plans and report actions taken, causes, and preventive measures to management and stakeholders. Other duties as needed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Possess a NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems. Possess a valid Washington State EL06 low voltage electrical license or equivalent. Abie to work independently or as a member of a team. Abie to read and understand fire alarm and electrical blueprints. Familiar with NFPA 70 & 72 requirements pertaining to fire alarm systems and the implementation of fire codes. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Good work ethic, ability to manage a schedule and display good time management practices. In addition to the above, a candidate must possess one (1) of the following required qualification options: (OPTION 1)
Six (6) years of combined experience and/or education in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of computerized telemetry systems; and/or in the fields of computer science, electronics technology, electrical engineering, or closely allied field. (OPTION 2)
Associate's degree in computer science, electronics technology, electrical engineering, or closely allied field. Four (4) years of experience in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of computerized telemetry systems. (OPTION 3)
Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics technology, electrical engineering, or closely allied field. Two (2) years of experience in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of computerized telemetry systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Honeywell Notifier or JCI Fire Alarm Systems Installation and Programming. Experience with limited power and low voltage systems pertaining to fire alarm systems, networking, and field wiring.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.
Note:
Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for
exempt
employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
Military Leave Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Bereavement Leave Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
