(SMI) is a professional services firm that provides accounting, financial reporting, and fund administration support to a family of alternative investment vehicles, including venture capital, private credit, and opportunity zone funds. SMI partners with investment managers, auditors, and custodians to ensure transparency, accuracy, and compliance across all financial operations. The Accounting Fellowship Program is a six-month, part-time opportunity designed for emerging professionals seeking hands‑on experience in corporate and fund accounting within the alternative investment industry. Fellows will gain exposure to both day‑to‑day accounting operations and high‑level financial analysis, supporting activities such as fund consolidations, audits, valuations, and investor reporting. POSITION OVERVIEW As an Accounting Fellow , you will work closely with the fund accounting and corporate finance teams to prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports that support both management and investor needs. You’ll gain practical experience in investment fund operations, learn the fundamentals of GAAP financial reporting, and assist in audit preparation and documentation. This role offers valuable insight into the accounting processes behind alternative investments and private funds, ideal for those pursuing a CPA or MBA and interested in careers in financial management, fund operations, or investment accounting. Part‑time: 29 hours per week; 6‑month fellowship Compensation: $32.00 per hour Location: Airport Towers, Irvine, CA (in‑person) Reports to: Senior Accounting Manager KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with monthly and quarterly close processes for both management company and investment fund entities. Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Analyze general ledger activity for accuracy and completeness. Help track due‑to/from balances, related‑party transactions, and loan receivables. Financial Reporting & Audit Preparation Compile documentation and audit support schedules for external auditors and fund administrators. Assist in preparing management financial reports and variance analysis. Review and organize supporting documents for fund NAV packages, valuation updates, and investor statements. Support the implementation of accounting policies and internal control procedures. Process Improvement, Data Management, & Administrative Support Contribute to improving accounting workflows, templates, and tracking tools. Assist in data validation between accounting systems, fund administrator reports, and investor portals. Coordinate with investment and fund administration teams to verify data consistency. Maintain accurate digital records and workpapers. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Enrollment in or completion of an MBA or Master’s in Accounting program preferred but not required. Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP) and financial statements. Interest in alternative investments, private credit, or fund management. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Detail‑oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
