Job Description Are you passionate about plants, parks, and making a difference in your community? The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking a

part-time Gardener

supporting the horticulture team in Parks Maintenance District 4 maintaining beautiful and welcoming public spaces. This hands-on role is perfect for someone who has a passion for horticulture, enjoys working outdoors, values teamwork, and takes pride in creating exceptional park experiences that enhance the lives of Raleigh residents.

About You: You're a self-starter with a strong work ethic and a love for horticulture. You enjoy working with your hands, being outside, and contributing to the beauty and functionality of public spaces. You're dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team. You bring a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and grow in your role. The ideal candidate will be passionate about understanding good horticultural and maintenance practices, including weeding, watering, proper pruning, soil preparation, planting, invasive plant removal, debris and trash removal, and assisting with herbicide applications. This new team member must also have excellent customer service skills, as you may advise garden clubs, civic groups, and individual citizens on gardening topics and frequently work with volunteers on large projects.

Work Schedule: The work schedule for the District Crew Gardener is flexible. However, the minimum hours are 15 hours per week and the maximum allotted hours for this position are 25 hours per week. Our office hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm in the Fall/Winter and 6:00 am - 2:30 am in Spring/Summer.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Assist with planting and maintaining flowers, turf, and ornamental landscapes Support weed and invasive species management using mechanical and chemical methods Perform general grounds maintenance: trach/litter collection, leaf and debris removal, edging, weed eating, blowing, and snow/ice removal Collaborate with full time staff, volunteers, and other City departments Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and aesthetics in all assigned areas Typical Qualifications Education and Experience: Six or more (6+) months of training beyond High School in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Grounds Maintenance, Pest Control or related field, and 1 to 3 years' experience in specialized turf maintenance, landscape design/maintenance, parks maintenance, arboriculture or related work

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Additional Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Extensive landscape gardening experience knowledge of annual plants, perennials, shrubs, and trees Plant identification, site, soil and environmental needs, hardiness zones, water, nutrition and maintenance associated with horticulture Attention to detail to sustain high quality and aesthetics expected at all park and surrounding sites Excellent communication skills with a positive attitude to work with the Horticulture Team, other city staff, outside entities and volunteers Time management, punctuality, dependability and the ability to prioritize and multi-task

ADA and Other Requirements:

Work Environment and Physical Effort: Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor or street environment (near moving traffic) and in or around vehicles. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment, or a shop environment. Work Exposures: There is frequent exposure extreme heat (above 100 degrees) and moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), fumes or airborne particles and loud noises.
