Day in the Life of a Heavy Equipment Operator
You start each shift by fueling and inspecting all vehicles, ensuring they are in good condition. You then load and transport tools and equipment to the job site. Using heavy machinery such as backhoes and excavators, you dig holes and trenches required for structural concrete, preparing areas for parking lots, sidewalks, loading docks, and driveways. You also work on roads, bridges, and railroads, remaining alert to ensure crew safety while operating bulldozers, front‑end loaders, and grade tractors. Your mechanical skills come in handy for routine maintenance and minor repairs, and you take pride in safely completing each job.
Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation
- Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades
- Excellent mechanical skills
- Willingness to work some evenings and weekends
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
