Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work. Operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City water, wastewater, and City's drainage system. Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions Repairs leaks in the wastewater collection system or water distribution system. May repair leaks on pipes in depths of over 6' feet, responsible for trench safety, replace service tubing; repair/replace sewer, lateral line, cleanout, main line and/or tapping saddle.
Responsible for checking water and wastewater stations, keeping grounds neat and clean. Assists with work on pumps, motors, controls and electrical wiring, SCADA system, wet wells, dry wells, elevated towers and ground storage tanks. Performs preventative maintenance on all station equipment and elevated towers, ground storage tanks.
Removes debris, closes and opens valves to ensure proper operation, flushes lines; replaces damaged parts. Uses chemicals such as floating degreaser, chlorine, caustic soda, and all-purpose cleaners.
Repairs manholes, and city clean-outs and valves by using a pick, shovel and/or jackhammer. Performs water and sewer taps, dig trenches or holes; assist heavy equipment operator to open hole, drill hole using tapping machine or hole saw. Performs related duties and special projects as assigned. May assist other departments when emergencies arise.
Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or GED. One year of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems required.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions, such as completing work orders. Ability to fill out daily reports and checklist for water and wastewater stations. Ability to read and understand labels on equipment, chemicals, reports and memos. Ability to use math to calculate water usage at stations and hourly readings on water/wastewater stations. Ability to interact and get along with other crew members and the general public. Ability to follow safety procedures.
Other Requirements Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Class "A" CDL is preferred or the ability to obtain with Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment required.
Must reside within a 1-hour response time from the Public Works Building, employee will have six (6) months from employment date in which to relocate. Will be subject to covering/handling first-call or back-up call when assigned.
Must have a minimum of a Class "D" Water License and Wastewater Collection System Class I License or be able to obtain within 12 months of being hired. A Class "C" Water Distribution License and Wastewater Collection System Class II License is preferred.
Must be able to stand, walk on uneven terrain, asphalt, concrete, water, mud, rock, frequently work in mud which may be knee deep. Ability to lift tools and equipment which may weigh up to 150 pounds. This job requires reaching, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, climbing and balance in order to use equipment, elevate work site, etc. May be required to operate foot controls on heavy equipment such as backhoe and other machinery. Exposed to extremes in outdoor temperature, inclement weather, fumes and trenching during water operations.
