Position Overview:
The Senior Director of Compensation Operations plays a pivotal role in providing strategic leadership and oversight for the Compensation Services department. This includes critical areas such as Payroll Operations, Employee Benefits, Compliance, and Tax Reporting. You will lead a dedicated team to deliver accurate, timely, and compliant services to over 26,000 employees across the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS). Your goal will be to develop and implement integrated compensation strategies that align with the organization's objectives while ensuring employee satisfaction and regulatory compliance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of compensation, benefits, payroll, and compliance practices in large organizations.
In-depth understanding of federal, state, and local laws related to employment, compensation, benefits, and tax reporting.
Strong familiarity with enterprise HRIS and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle), including data integration and reporting.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage large-scale operations focused on service excellence.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with stakeholders.
Strategic planning, policy development, and change management expertise.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret and leverage complex data.
Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Education, Training, and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in business administration, human resources, accounting, or a related field.
Five years of relevant experience in compensation, payroll, or benefits administration.
A minimum of five years in a supervisory role.
Demonstrated administrative and leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree or recognized HR certification (e.g., CEBS, CPP, SPHR).
Experience with Oracle payroll and benefits systems.
Knowledge of North Carolina Retirement Plans.
Experience in the public sector or educational institutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide strategic direction for Compensation Services, overseeing Payroll, Benefits, and Compliance.
Supervise three directors, ensuring alignment with department goals and fostering accountability.
Develop integrated compensation strategies for recruitment, retention, and engagement.
Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
Oversee the development of policies and procedures for payroll and benefits processing.
Collaborate with Finance, HR, Legal, and IT for integrated compensation-related systems.
Lead the department’s response to audits, ensuring accurate documentation and resolution.
Analyze compensation data to inform decisions and provide strategic recommendations.
Manage vendor relationships for benefits and payroll services, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
Enhance employee understanding of compensation and benefits through effective communication strategies.
Represent Compensation Services in cross-departmental initiatives and advise executive leadership.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support WCPSS’s mission and goals.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
Must be able to utilize office equipment such as computers and copiers. Effective communication is essential. The role may require lifting objects up to ten pounds occasionally and driving automotive equipment as required. The position primarily involves sedentary work.
