Fiber Optic Splicing Specialist , you will play a key role in the installation, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic cabling systems. This dynamic position requires both practical Intermediate Technician skills and the advanced expertise expected from a Lead Technician. You will operate in mission-critical environments where precision, comprehensive documentation, and compliance with safety and quality standards are paramount. This position involves significant travel to client locations for hands-on fiber optic work, so candidates must be comfortable working in a variety of settings and traveling frequently. Travel Requirement: 90% of the time. Must reside near a major airport. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Execute fusion and mechanical splicing for single-mode and multi-mode fibers, including ribbon splicing. Prepare and terminate fiber optic cables following industry best practices. Manage installation of fiber in diverse settings such as ODFs, splice trays, enclosures, and patch panels. Carry out meticulous cable preparation, which includes stripping, cleaving, cleaning, and fiber protection. Label and route fiber according to documentation and design standards. Utilize advanced testing equipment (OTDR, OLTS, power meters, visual fault locators) for certifying and troubleshooting fiber links. Conduct end-to-end testing including insertion loss, return loss, and reflectance measurements. Analyze OTDR traces for fault, splice, and connector loss identification. Compile comprehensive test results and reports for client approval and compliance purposes. Diagnose and resolve fiber optic network faults, including complex issues requiring escalated solutions. Carry out root cause analysis and implement strategies to avert future problems. Address service outages with swift emergency repairs to minimize disruption. Oversee high-count and ribbon fiber splicing projects, including mass fusion splicing. Orchestrate fiber assignments, routing, and labeling for extensive installations. Support network expansion, migration, and reconfiguration efforts while ensuring minimal service interruption. Maintain accurate records of splicing, testing, and repair operations. Ensure all work adheres to industry standards (e.g., ITU-T, FOA, BICSI, TIA/EIA, NEC) and safety regulations. Participate in quality audits to uphold compliance with operational standards. Assist with as-built documentation and change control processes. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing, testing, and installation at Tier 2 or Tier 3 level. Deep understanding of optical fiber principles such as attenuation, dispersion, and signal integrity. Proficiency in operating high-precision fusion splicers (e.g., Fujikura, Sumitomo, or INNO). Expertise in reading fiber network design diagrams and splice schematics. Experience in both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) environments. Advanced capability with OTDRs, light source/power meters, visual inspection tools, and fiber identifiers. Ability to troubleshoot complex OTDR traces and analyze reflectometry data. Knowledge of fiber characterization testing, DWDM/CWDM network factors, and loss budgeting. Comfortable operating in data center settings, including hot and cold aisles and structured cabling architectures. Familiar with cable management best practices and physical infrastructure documentation. Experience in live network environments adhering to strict uptime service level agreements (SLAs). Comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols pertaining to fiber optic activities, including laser safety and confined space awareness. Understanding of environmental and electrical regulations (OSHA, NEC, and local standards). Reliable history of quality assurance processes and precision workmanship. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with engineers, project managers, and clients. Demonstrated leadership in mentoring junior technicians or overseeing project teams. Effective time management and multitasking skills under tight deadlines. Analytical mindset with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently in field settings. Familiarity with digital documentation tools, fiber management software, and reporting systems. Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or similar documentation platforms. Basic understanding of network monitoring tools and Layer 1-2 network concepts. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: FOA CFOT, CFOS/T, or BICSI certifications (or equivalent regional qualifications). Manufacturer training/certification (e.g., Corning, CommScope, or AFL). Experience in hyperscale or enterprise data center environments. Project leadership or supervisory roles within a technical team.
