The Need:

This Scope of Work outlines the responsibilities, qualifications, and terms for a contract Mechanical Engineer/Maintenance Technician position within the a mixing department. The role focuses on ensuring reliable operation, maintenance, and optimization of mechanical systems and equipment used in rubber processing and mixing operations. The contractor will provide hands-on technical support, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and support production efficiency.

This is a contract position with an expected duration of 1 year, subject to extension based on performance and business needs. The candidate will be considered for a Full-Time position after the six-month period.

This is a full-time ONSITE position at our client's site in Ft Wayne, Indianna

Work Schedule: Normal work hours 40 hrs/ week Monday - Friday, however occasional shifts in schedules can be made to provide coverage for project installations and start-ups requiring weekend or holiday coverage. Overtime work may be approved as needed but will not be typical. Work Plant Shutdowns as needed. This work almost always falls on weekends & Holidays. Work schedules will vary based on project need and assignment. Must Have Requirements:

Education and Experience: Associate degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing environment. Notes: Bachelor's degree preferred. Millwright Journeyman or relevant experience will be considered in place of an associate's degree. Experience of at least 2 years specifically in rubber processing, mixing operations, or millwright services strongly preferred. Technical Skills:

Proficiency in mechanical troubleshooting, welding, fabrication, blueprint reading, and use of diagnostic tools (e.g., vibration analysis, alignment tools). Familiarity with PLC basics for integration with mechanical systems is a plus. Certifications:

Valid certifications such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT), or OSHA 10/30. Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, ability to work independently or in a team, with effective communication for reporting issues to management. Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced industrial environment with exposure to chemicals, noise, and varying temperatures. Day-to-day job responsibilities:

The Mechanical Engineer/Maintenance Technician will perform the following duties, with a primary focus on mechanical systems in the mixing department:

Conduct condition-based inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on mixing equipment, mills, extruders, Banbury mixers, and related mechanical components to ensure optimal performance and safety. Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical failures in rubber processing machinery, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and rotating equipment systems. Perform installations, modifications, and upgrades to mechanical systems in alignment with production requirements and safety standards. Collaborate with production teams to identify equipment issues, implement solutions, and support process improvements in rubber mixing operations. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, parts usage, and downtime reports using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) software. Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and PPE usage. Respond to emergency call-ins outside regular hours to address critical mechanical breakdowns and restore operations promptly. Assist in development of mechanical maintainers on maintenance best practices specific to rubber processing equipment. Support the Maintenance Manager in deployment and sustainment of the Maintenance Management systems.
