Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Communications and Content Strategy is a senior leader within the Office of University Marketing and Communications, responsible for overseeing and executing a unified communications strategy that strengthens AUM's brand, supports current students, student recruitment, and drives institutional visibility.
This role combines the strategic oversight of university-wide communications-including media relations, executive messaging, and brand alignment-with a strong focus on content marketing that advances enrollment and engagement goals.
As both a storyteller and strategist, the Director collaborates with Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and campus partners to deliver compelling, data-informed messaging across all digital and traditional platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications & Messaging Leadership Develop and lead a comprehensive, integrated communications strategy that enhances AUM's reputation and supports institutional priorities. Serve as the university's primary communications strategist, shaping messaging frameworks and storytelling across platforms. Oversee executive communications, speeches, talking points, and leadership messaging to ensure clarity, alignment, and impact. Maintain oversight of all internal and external messaging to ensure consistency with AUM's brand voice and mission. Enrollment-Focused Content Strategy
Partner with Enrollment Management to create campaigns that support recruitment, yield, and student engagement. Lead the development of personalized, data-driven content across the prospect journey-from inquiry to enrollment. Manage multi-platform content campaigns (email, video, digital ads, website, social media) that increase awareness, interest, and conversion. Align all enrollment content with CRM platforms and best practices in digital communications, UX, and SEO. Media Relations & Public Affairs
Serve as the university's media lead, managing proactive media outreach, press releases, media advisories, and issue response. Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and national media to expand AUM's visibility. Act as a trusted spokesperson or coordinate spokesperson responsibilities with university leadership during crises and key moments. Content Development & Brand Oversight
Guide the development of branded content that reflects AUM's mission, student-centered focus, and strategic priorities. Oversee production of storytelling assets-videos, photography, written features, blogs, and digital campaigns-that highlight academic excellence and student success. Ensure content accessibility, compliance, and alignment with AUM's voice, visual identity, and inclusive communication standards. Team Leadership & Cross-Campus Collaboration
Lead and develop a creative team, including communications specialists, videographers, photographers, and web content developers. Foster collaboration with departments across the university to ensure alignment of messaging, strategy, and timelines. Work closely with external marketing and creative agencies to ensure brand consistency and campaign effectiveness. Measurement & Optimization
Monitor and analyze content performance, engagement metrics, and media reach to inform decisions and optimize results. Deliver regular reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor and senior leadership on the impact of communications and content strategies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience managing creative teams and collaborating with cross-functional partners. Knowledge of web content management systems and media relations best practices. Knowledge of acceptable supervisory practices Knowledge of public relations and marketing strategies Knowledge of applicable state and federal rules and regulations Ability to think creatively with strong strategic intellectual skills Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field (master's preferred). Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, or content strategy, preferably in higher education. Strong leadership and project management skills with a track record of delivering integrated communications plans and campaigns. Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities across digital and traditional formats. Proficiency in digital content strategy, social media, email marketing, SEO, and CRM-driven communications. Experience managing creative teams and collaborating with cross-functional partners. Knowledge of web content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and media relations best practices.
