Job Summary:

The Controller will oversee the financial and accounting operations for a Rhode Island based seafood manufacturer and distributor. This role is responsible for maintaining the integrity of financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing financial insights to guide strategic decisions. The Controller will manage general accounting operations, including general ledger, journal entries, financial statements, and month/year-end close, and play a key role in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, inventory controls, and compliance with bank covenants.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial Reporting & General Accounting: Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow) in accordance with GAAP. Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring that journal entries and general ledger reconciliations are completed accurately. Review and post journal entries, ensuring all entries are supported with appropriate documentation and comply with accounting principles. Monitor general ledger activity and conduct monthly reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records. Ensure the integrity of accounting systems and records through the consistent application of accounting policies and procedures. Budgeting & Forecasting:

Develop, implement, and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the CFO and executive team. Lead the budgeting process by coordinating with department heads to gather necessary data and providing guidance on budgetary controls. Perform regular forecasting to provide visibility into future financial performance, identifying potential variances and areas of improvement. Assist in preparing long-term financial projections to support business planning. Cash Flow Management & Analysis:

Oversee cash flow management and conduct regular analysis to ensure the company meets its liquidity needs. Develop cash flow forecasts and provide recommendations to optimize the company's financial position. Manage banking relationships and ensure compliance with bank covenants, providing regular reporting as needed. Maintain oversight of short-term borrowing, debt facilities, and loan covenants to optimize capital structure. Inventory Management & Cost Control:

Oversee the financial aspects of inventory management, including tracking inventory levels, valuation, and reporting. Work closely with operations to analyze and report on variances in inventory levels, and implement controls to improve inventory accuracy. Review and ensure proper accounting treatment of inventory adjustments, reserves, and write-offs. Risk Management & Compliance:

Manage relationships with external auditors, ensuring all audit requirements are met and that financial statements are prepared accurately. Coordinate with insurance providers to ensure the company has adequate coverage for its risks. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations in collaboration with external tax advisors. Provide timely and accurate information to the outside accounting firm for tax planning, filing, and compliance purposes. Banking & Financing:

Oversee all aspects of the company's banking operations, including monitoring cash balances, managing lines of credit, and securing favorable terms for financing. Ensure compliance with all bank covenants and report any issues to senior management and lenders. Serve as the primary point of contact with external financial institutions, including banks, insurance carriers, and audit firms. Leadership & Team Management:

Lead and mentor the accounting and finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Implement best practices in financial management, internal controls, and compliance. Work with cross-functional teams to ensure that financial goals are aligned with the company's operational strategies. Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred). Minimum of 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing or distribution environment. Proven experience with financial reporting, general ledger, and budgeting/forecasting. Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles. Experience in managing cash flow, forecasting, and budget processes. Hands-on experience with inventory accounting and cost control in a manufacturing setting. Familiarity with bank covenant compliance and financial reporting for debt management. Advanced proficiency in accounting software (ERP experience preferred) and Microsoft Excel. Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Skills:

Experience managing relationships with external audit firms, banks, and insurance providers. Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information to senior management and external stakeholders. Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a team to achieve financial accuracy and efficiency.
