As a Backbone Network Development Planner, you will manage the planning and development of Amazon's physical network infrastructure. You should possess experience in planning and designing network infrastructure, including dark fiber, colocation, and ISP cabling, as well as knowledge of optical transport technologies and engineering design principles. A strong understanding of regional network infrastructure providers is crucial. This role demands extensive collaboration, strategic planning, high-availability solution design, and thorough documentation. Key Responsibilities: Act as the subject matter expert for topology change management and infrastructure demand across the Americas. Collaboratively create network infrastructure execution plans with Business Developers involving leased wavelengths, dark fiber, and submarine cable capacity/builds. Develop strategic regional backbone network plans addressing short-, medium-, and long-term needs. Work alongside network engineering to ensure consistent design, network efficiency, cost optimization, and scalability. Analyze topology information and performance metrics to recommend improvements. Manage network changes to support increased traffic and geographic expansion. Translate forecasts into actionable network infrastructure projects. Ensure network availability, performance, and develop remediation plans for non-compliance. Document the physical infrastructure of global backbone networks. A Day in the Life: This Planner position emphasizes enhancing backbone performance and managing network planning across the Americas. Daily tasks include coordinating with Business Development and Network Engineering teams to create infrastructure plans, analyze performance data, and implement optimization strategies. You will maintain topology documentation, oversee network changes, and serve as the planning expert across regions. Strong analytical skills are essential for translating forecasts into actionable projects while prioritizing network efficiency and cost-effectiveness. You will also collaborate closely with stakeholders to drive strategic planning initiatives and maintain high-availability solutions. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience. At least 5 years of experience in the telecommunications field. Direct technical experience with long-haul dark fiber networks and DWDM systems. Proven influence in the planning, design, development, contracting, implementation, and operation of long-haul backbone networks. In-depth knowledge of IP peering ecosystems, fiber optic networks, and submarine cables. Ability to make data-driven decisions yielding results. Preferred Qualifications: Experience at a large network operator, OTT, or Internet Service Provider. Experience in the co-location ecosystem and data center expansion projects. The salary for this role ranges from $83,100/year in our lowest market up to $177,800/year in our highest. Compensation varies based on experience, skills, and market location.
