Position Summary
The
Revenue Cycle Director
oversees all functions of revenue cycle operations, from
patient access and registration
through
billing, coding, claims, collections, and denials management . This position ensures optimal cash flow, compliance, efficiency, and reporting accuracy, while partnering with clinical, financial, and operational leaders to drive
revenue integrity and financial performance
across the organization.
Supervises Managers or supervisors of the following teams: Patient Access / Registration Health Information Management (HIM) / Coding Billing & Claims Processing Collections / Accounts Receivable Denials, Appeals & Payment Integrity Financial Counseling / Patient Financial Services
May also oversee vendors or outsourced billing operations. Supervisory Responsibilities
Recruit, mentor, and evaluate revenue cycle staff. Set departmental goals, KPIs, and accountability measures. Delegate projects, monitor progress, and ensure performance. Facilitate cross-training, process standardization, and professional development. Enforce consistent policies, procedures, and internal controls. Foster collaboration with finance, clinical, and compliance teams. Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute a comprehensive
revenue cycle strategy
aligned with the clinic's financial and growth objectives. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize revenue capture and reduce cash leakage. Monitor payer trends, regulations, and reimbursement changes to proactively adjust operations. Partner with CFO, operations, IT, and clinical teams to align financial and operational goals. Deliver insightful reporting and dashboards to executive leadership. Operational Oversight
Oversee all revenue cycle functions, including: Pre-registration and eligibility verification Insurance verification and prior authorizations Coding accuracy and compliance Claims submission, tracking, and reconciliation Denials management, appeals, and payment integrity Patient billing, collections, and financial counseling AR follow-up and aging management
Define and track KPIs such as
days in AR, clean claim rate, denial rate, and cash collections. Standardize workflows, documentation, and systems use. Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions. Lead optimization of billing systems, EHR interfaces, and automation tools. Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure adherence to payer requirements and healthcare regulations (HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid). Maintain strong internal controls and audit readiness. Manage vendor contracts for billing, collections, or denial management. Mitigate revenue leakage, underpayments, and write-offs through monitoring and audits. Review payer contracts and reimbursement agreements. Financial & Reporting
Develop budgets, forecasts, and financial models for revenue cycle operations. Analyze variances and identify improvement opportunities. Provide regular reporting to leadership on
revenue cycle performance, cash flow, and risk areas. Support strategic financial planning and service expansion decisions. Staff Development & Culture
Build a culture of
accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Provide ongoing staff education on payer rules, coding updates, and system tools. Champion teamwork and positive communication across departments. Education & Certifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Health Administration, Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field. Preferred:
Master's degree (MHA or MBA). Certifications such as: CRCR
- Certified Revenue Cycle Representative CPC / CCS
- Certified Professional Coder / Certified Coding Specialist CHFP / HFMA
- Certified Healthcare Financial Professional
Experience
Required:
7-10+ years of progressive experience in
healthcare revenue cycle, billing, or financial operations. 3-5 years in a
leadership or managerial role
overseeing multiple revenue cycle functions. Strong hands-on experience with
payer contracts, AR management, denials, and appeals. Proven track record in
revenue integrity, compliance, and process improvement. Familiarity with billing systems, EHR interfaces, and claims adjudication platforms. Preferred:
Ambulatory or multi-specialty clinic experience. Management of outsourced billing or RCM vendors. Involvement in system implementation, automation, or workflow redesign. Understanding of value-based reimbursement and payer mix diversity. Required Skills & Abilities
Strategic mindset with strong analytical and financial acumen. Deep knowledge of
coding, claims processing, and payer rules. Skilled in
data analysis, financial modeling, and metric-driven management. Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills. Proficiency with
EHR and billing systems, revenue cycle software, and Excel. Ability to manage change and drive process optimization. High integrity, objectivity, and attention to detail. Comfortable presenting complex data to non-financial audiences. Compensation & Benefits
