Aircraft Mechanic I (Avionics/Electrical) Performs repairs and troubleshoots aircraft systems and malfunctions including avionics, navigation, electrical, and communications systems. This full‑time position is based in Ft. Benning, GA, supporting the UH60 Program for the U.S. Army Ranger School. The role requires qualification and ongoing use of a respirator, including OSHA training and a Medical Evaluation Questionnaire.
Responsibilities
Install, remove, inspect, test, adjust, or repair avionics equipment, such as radar, radio, and navigation systems.
Installs and repairs electrical wiring and/or cable on aircraft in adherence to established specifications.
Cut, strip, and insulate wires and connections.
Assemble components such as switches, electrical controls, and junction boxes using hand tools and soldering irons.
Safely prepare aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks and services.
Perform scheduled inspections and assist in performing special inspections.
Perform limited maintenance operational checks and diagnose aircraft systems using special tools and test equipment.
Use and maintain operator maintenance tools, special tools, and aircraft ground support equipment.
Apply comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as aircraft Technical Manuals, Maintenance Information, and Action Messages.
Maintain and repair aircraft components including flight controls, instruments, pitot‑static, communications, navigation, and electrical systems.
Use technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to determine equipment malfunctions and restore equipment condition or operation.
Perform maintenance operational checks and FOD walks as required.
Operate a tug/SATS to move the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) if needed.
Maintain a valid driver’s license.
Perform other duties as requested.
Required Experience
Valid driver’s license to operate tug/SATS.
Minimum of 2 years experience with documented training on the MDS H60 series (or equivalent).
FAA A&P license and at least 1 year of documented general aviation experience, or equivalent military training.
Specialty mechanics (Avionics/Electrical) with a minimum of 2 years of documented training on the MDS H60 series systems.
Education High School Graduate or GED.
Preferred Experience
General knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and parts replacement.
Thorough knowledge of aircraft electrical and avionics component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and parts replacement.
Proficiency with unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, and micrometers.
Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
Experience inspecting all required aeronautical maintenance performed by mechanics.
Ability to follow technical guidance, make entries in aircraft logs and records, and provide support to supervisors.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Work in aircraft areas, hangars, workshops, and other industrial settings.
Must walk, stand, climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands for extended periods.
Must crouch, crawl, grasp, and use finger dexterity while reaching above and below shoulders.
May lift heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.
Must type using a standard keyboard.
Will handle dirty parts, lubricants, and wear proper PPE.
Must pass a respirator physical and fit test annually.
Must enter and exit aircraft fuel cells (≈17 inches diameter).
May operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, and forklifts.
Must work in noisy, drafty, or dirty environments and may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or austere conditions.
Security Clearance None required; candidates must be able to pass Fort Benning Base Access background screening.
