Pay Range Base pay: $74,678.00/yr – $97,076.00/yr (actual pay based on skills and experience).
Summary The Advanced Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing a wide range of specialized clinical procedures using radioactive materials at a higher level of duties, requiring significant scope and complexity. This Multi-Modality Technologist must hold appropriate specific certification in nuclear medicine (NMTCB or ARRT(N)), as well as CT (NMTCB(CT) or ARRT(CT)) and/or MR (ARRT(MR)) applicable to independently perform assignment duties.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens are available).
Certification: Must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N).
Education: Completion of a NMTCB‑recognized nuclear medicine technology program or an accredited program by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT); degree can be associate, baccalaureate, or master’s.
Clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, procedures, and radio‑pharmacy as determined by NMTCB.
Multi‑modality technologists must also hold certifications in CT (NMTCB(CT) or ARRT(CT)) and/or MR (ARRT(MR)).
Grandfathering Provision: Current VHA employees meeting VA Qualification Standard may be employed on a grandfathered basis.
Experience: For GS‑11, 1 year of creditable experience at the next lower grade (GS‑9) directly related to the position and full KSAs at that level.
Advanced KSAs: Knowledge of contrast media, patient safety, quality control, and ability to troubleshoot nuclear medicine, CT, and MR equipment; ability to administer radiopharmaceuticals and IV contrast, document procedures, and ensure radiation safety compliance.
Duties
Perform fusion imaging such as PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and PET/MR procedures, including diagnostic nuclear medicine‑CT‑MR fused images.
Operating and maintaining gamma cameras, PET/CT scanners, and related equipment; conduct daily and weekly quality control testing.
Ensure radiation safety guidelines are followed per NRC, DOT, NHPPC, OSHA, and Joint Commission.
Administer radiopharmaceuticals and IV contrast, monitor patients, and maintain accurate records.
Document and communicate all procedures and findings to physicians and staff.
Assist in regulatory audits and compliance reporting.
Maintain patient comfort and safety throughout procedures.
Provide scheduling and coordination of imaging studies with VA scheduling mandates.
