Human Resources Generalist

Base pay range $70,000.00/yr - $83,000.00/yr
Position Overview The HR Generalist will support all areas of Human Resources for the Chicago Stars. Working closely with the VP, Human Resources, the role will manage payroll administration and oversee the employee experience across talent acquisition, onboarding, benefits, performance management, and employee relations. The HR Generalist will help review, develop, and implement programs that enrich our culture.
Essential Duties
Demonstrate leadership in accordance with Chicago Stars FC mission, vision, and values.
Uphold the confidentiality of the Human Resources department and act with integrity at all times.
Assist the VP with HR projects, programs, and initiatives.
Ensure data quality across HR systems, troubleshoot issues, and resolve discrepancies in partnership with HR and Finance.
Collaborate with the VP to execute the yearly performance evaluation process, including training, documentation, and calendar management.
Assist in developing HR standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in talent management.
Keep current with federal and state laws and regulations relevant to HR.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Talent Management
Develop and maintain recruiting and hiring documents for internal and external use.
Ensure proper documentation and retention of all job postings, descriptions, interview notes, and related materials.
Build close relationships with hiring managers to clarify candidate expectations.
Coordinate staffing needs and candidate selection with hiring managers.
Co‑lead all recruiting activities within the organization, such as job description creation, posting, sourcing, resume review, interviews, and candidate correspondence.
Support sourcing of all roles, including passive searching and research of unique sourcing solutions with a focus on underrepresented groups.
Research and coordinate participation in career fairs and other events.
Ensure hiring managers are trained on all recruiting processes and procedures.
Onboarding & Offboarding
Conduct pre‑employment and rehire processes, including collection of required documents, background checks, and HRIS updates.
Support the development and continuous improvement of new hire onboarding and orientation programs.
Conduct exit interviews and process separation paperwork, collecting company property as needed.
Payroll Administration
Process and review semi‑monthly full‑cycle exempt and non‑exempt payroll, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Ensure timely submission of approved time records.
Resolve pay discrepancies in partnership with other departments.
Manage payroll inbox and respond to employee inquiries.
Create and maintain payroll process SOPs.
Ensure accuracy and compliance of employee data in the HR system.
Audit payroll reports for accuracy and completeness.
Validate legal orders, entered deduction codes, and generate reports for audits.
Benefits & Leave Administration
Provide guidance on FMLA, ADA, worker’s compensation, and employee benefits.
Support annual open enrollment and communicate with vendors or brokers.
Maintain accurate benefits enrollment, leave tracking, and accommodations.
Assist with companywide health, safety, and wellness initiatives.
Required Qualifications and Experience
5+ years full‑time HR experience, including recruiting and sourcing.
3+ years payroll administration experience; experience with Paychex or similar platform.
Strong knowledge of payroll administration, processing, time‑keeping, ATS, and HRIS.
Comprehensive knowledge of employment laws, labor relations, and recruitment.
Professional demeanor and strong customer service skills.
Exceptional time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in employee relations, performance management, and compensation philosophies.
Ability to develop and maintain internal and external relationships.
High interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive confidential situations.
Strong technical skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field.
Bi‑lingual or multi‑lingual (preferred).
Knowledge of OSHA and workplace safety (preferred).
Experience in professional sports, hospitality, entertainment (preferred).
Familiarity with immigration and visa processes (preferred).
Physical Demands
Physical lifting up to 20 pounds.
Prolonged periods sitting, working at a computer.
Location/Work Environment
Work hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.
Position located at Chicago office at least 3 times per week; some on‑site work at training facility in Bridgeview, IL.
Non‑standard hours possible, including evenings, weekends, and game/match days.
