About The Job Your job as an
Area Manager
is responsible for the effective management of the Packaging and Processing Areas for Manufacturing Operations. Responsible for all safety, compliance, and production training for personnel. Fosters a positive work culture by ensuring 1:1 meetings between leadership and frontline employees. Ensures supervisors and lead technicians have training on the optimum utilization of personnel, equipment, and materials governing product quality, cost, and employee safety.
Main Responsibilities
Ensures optimum utilization of packaging and processing facilities, personnel, and equipment to meet production planning, budgetary, quality, and employee safety requirements.
Operates within OSHA Safety Regulations and “Current Good Manufacturing Practices” during day-to-day operations including, but not limited to, housekeeping, documentation, and other internal regulations.
Drives continuous improvement efforts in the areas of productivity, cGMP compliance, and employee safety.
Manages direct reports (50 to 100 people employees including, but not limited to, material handlers, line attendants, packaging and processing technicians, lead technicians and supervisors) in all daily plant operations.
Interviews and selects personnel, determines placement and training processes, and identifies potential for hire and advancement. Recommends compensation and disposition of personnel.
Develops training programs for packaging and processing technicians which will foster team concept understanding and participation in problem solving.
Drives continuous profit improvement initiatives through improvements in labor/materials productivity, packaging line and processing operating efficiencies, and employee cost awareness through education and training.
Maintains adherence to personnel policies within the plant.
Designs and implements packaging and processing methods.
Initiates studies to improve packaging and processing operations productivity.
Supervises effectiveness and maintenance of packaging and processing equipment. Coordinates equipment changeovers and major maintenance with production scheduling and the maintenance team.
Recommends minor and major modifications of existing equipment to improve overall operations performance. Recommends capital expenditures and provides input justification.
Schedules and directs all plant material needs and movements of components to satisfy production scheduling requirements and warehouse space limitations.
Prepares or directs preparation of all departmental records and reports. Ensures understanding and adherence to batch records and processing instructions.
Supervises batch production to meet business demands.
Investigates and provides corrective actions for deviations.
Provides input on new products and process proposals to optimize productivity validation.
Establishes and ensures safe working practices. Authorizes corrective action to reduce or eliminate potential safety hazards or hazardous conditions.
Reviews and provides input on department expense budgets, to include labor and operating supplies, while looking for opportunities for cost reduction. Establishes specifications of expense materials used to support operations and approves expenditures.
Maintains inventories and control of expensed purchased items.
Provides necessary training and supervision of sanitation department personnel and crew leaders to ensure compliance with FDA‑cGMP requirements, and Chattem Consumer Products Standard Operating Procedures.
Establishes and maintains compliance to Standard Operating Procedures. Provides updates, as necessary.
Coordinates production schedules and anticipates areas where available capacity could be an issue.
Performs detailed investigations of packaging and processing discrepancies. Identify root causes and recommend corrective action when necessary.
Ensures cooperation and interdepartmental collaboration with all support departments (Quality Assurance, Product Supply, Warehousing/Distribution Services, Product Development).
Recommends and issues corrective action when necessary.
Nurtures work culture to foster positive employee morale.
Professional Skills
Maintain satisfactory attendance record.
Drafts documents required for operation of the business to include proper grammar, accurate math calculations, and clear language that describes and/or directs action.
Ability to establish and maintain positive employee relations utilizing clear communication to team members and thorough problem‑solving techniques.
Role Specific Competencies
Training: As needed and determined by department supervisor to insure Chattem Consumer Products procedures compliance as required by FDA‑cGMP’s.
About You
Education: You must have a bachelor's degree in engineering, Business Administration or Chemistry.
Experience: 2-5 years’ experience in process engineering and/or manufacturing supervision and OTC pharmaceuticals or food and beverage industries.
Technical Skills: You should have a strong mechanical aptitude and ability to understand equipment operations, with the capacity to lift heavy loads (25‑60 lbs).
Attention to Detail: You must maintain close visual attention during manufacturing processes to ensure quality and safety.
Special Requirements: You must comply with the dress code (uniforms, safety gear), be willing to undergo necessary training, and be able to work in conditions with exposure to dust, grease, and packing machinery hazards.
Desired Qualifications: Additional qualifications such as Lean Six Sigma Certification, previous pharmaceutical experience, and familiarity with Production Automation Systems like SAP are desirable.
